Fuel Gauge Sensor Nipple Dripping

Hello...
I just got my gas tank repainted.
When I put it all back together, the little nipple on the fuel gauge sensor is dripping fuel.
I don't recall removing a hose and multiple threads have pointed out that nothing should be connected to it.
Is it possible that the sensor mechanism was damaged in transit or the painting process?
I'm assuming that it shouldn't be leaking.

Would there be an issue with just covering the nipple?
Does it need to "breathe" or anything?

I'm supposed to be riding it, tomorrow, so a quick reply would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks...
JJ

From looking at photos of the sensor, it pretty much has to either be leaking where the flange seals to the tank, or where the wires come out. A careful drying and inspection may let you see which it is.

I took the black plastic cap off (where the nipple is) and I tightened the 4 bolts.
I was able to move them, but I didn't want to over-tighten them and strip the holes.
I took it to a shop to put new handlebars on and I'm going to have them make sure they are torqued to spec.
If it's still leaking, I will replace the gasket.
I don't know why it started leaking.
I'm guessing something must have happened during transport or painting.

Maybe the paint was baked and the heat changed something.
