Who knew?

Are they all your photos, Danno?

Nice camera work, especially the panning shot.

Thanks, I took 1st panning shot as he went by right in front of me!
About 1/2 photos are mine from media-centre building.
Other folks provided photos from pit-lane.

Here's some more photos:

This last one commemorates Porsche 1971 Lemans 917/20 which had special bodywork designed just for that track. Was lambasted at introduction by media for looking like a pig. So Porsche followed through by painting it pink with butcher-cuts for actual race. It could do 248mph top-speed with 0-60 in 2.5s!

Is there any video around of that one? The only videos I've seen of that event show tractors going about 12 mph.

I think the 4-cyl ones can get up to about 20 mph

Sorry I wasn’t clear. This is original 1971 Pink Pig 917/20 model made for LeMans and 248mph straights. It was predecessor to 956/962 body-styles.

Then various privateer tribute models were made throughout the years.

Such as 918

911-GT3 (you pay extra to have AC/heater, power windows, power mirrors, power seats, etc. removed to save weight)

911-RSR won GT Class at 2018 LeMans

And this 111 tractor. There may actually be more Porsche tractors made than autos.

And as I understand it, Porsche didn't actually make any of them. They were all made by other companies under contract.

Yeah, due to post-war restrictions, Porsche had to farm out production to companies who were already making similar products, Allgaier of Germany and Hofherr Schrantz of Austria. There’s more collaboration in Europe anyway, similar to Japanese kereitsu system. Many of Porsche’s more modern cars were made in partnership with Volkswagen or Audi.

There’s lots of interesting cross-links between auto-makers. Toyota saved Porsche from bankruptcy in ‘90s by teaching JIT lean-manufacturing techniques (GM failed to learn that from joint-venture with Toyota in NUMMI). Now Toyota’s latest Supra is made in BMW’s Austrian plant.... Heck, Mexico was producing VW Beetles up until couple years ago.
