Changing pilot jets on a stock 250

Hey guys and gals, my wife's '10 250 doesn't get used as much as it should. She only rode 800km (500miles) last season. Sometimes the bike will sit for 3 weeks at a time. When it sits for this long, it's a total nightmare to start. From what I've gathered, I need to richen the carbs a bit. I've been told all I need to do it bump the pilots from 38 to 40.
I've tried to do a search on this, but there's so many posts on jetting, and most of them are due to exhaust and/or intake mods. This bike is bone stock, and my wife has no desire for any mods.
What do you recommend? Should I just bump up the pilots? What about shimming the needles?

If you know it's going to sit for any period of time, drain the carbs. If it's going to sit for much longer than 3 weeks, you should also stabilize the gas in the tank and put the battery on a tender.

I mean if you want to play with the jetting, you could pull the carbs, pop off the plugs on the epa caps, and put 1 washer on the needles. Then tune the idle mix screws 1/8 turn at a time until it feels better starting and riding.

If at all possible, it would definitely help to get it out and running once a week or so. They're kinda grouchy to start when they sit.

I do keep it on a tender, and I did have fuel stabilizer in it over the winter.
Has anyone, with a stock bike, just changed the pilots? If so, what were your results?

not necessary unless you've taken out the airbox. Just pull the caps on the mix screws, and turn them out 1/8-1/4 turn.

If your gonna play with the Idle mixture screws, google it.... and adjust them properly. You dont just aimlessly adjust them.

The stock needles suck, some after market ones will make you smile.

Stock pilot jet is fine for stock exhaust & air box. Good way to know if your pilot is correct. Is after adjusting idle mix, 3 turns or more out you need a bigger one. 1 turn out or less, you need a smaller one.
