MSF course!

Hey guys... I am back.
I took some much needed breathing room. First I want to thank everyone for helping me through the beginning stages of my motorcycle life. About a month ago I had a LOT on my plate and I was stressed out every day due to living situations and my job. I want to apologize for taking it out on you guys and I hope you forgive me.
Any who i just want to update everyone on my MSF course I took the first of this month. It helped me SO very much. At first it seemed to moved really slow (walking with the bike, learning how to turn and shift) but after an hour or so it really picked up. The cones were so hard for me at first but after about the 3rd time I got it down and could go decently fast through them! My skills improved drastically, and the last day of class it rained ALL day So i even go experience riding on wet pavement. It wasn't as bad as I expected expect for not having rain gear and being COMPLETELY soaked. I am proud to say I passed my test in the rain and I am now a licensed rider! go me! I highly recommend the class to anyone, don't let your pride get in the way of you taking it (I let it for a few months) I am so glad I finally took everyone's advice and took it. I am MUCH more confident now.

Congratulations on passing but know you are still a beginner. I have 50,000 miles and I feel like a am still a beginner because every year and every 5,000 miles and every new @misty or @csmith12 thread I read I gain much more control.

Overconfidence can be as dangerous as being too timid

Awesome news, each step gets you closer. Like every area there is always more to learn, and thankfully this community is able to keep providing it. Regardless your skills or bike type there is something to learn for all.

When I first wanted to obtain my motorcylce license, experienced riders told me the course was a waste of time. I did not listen, and took the course and passed the state riding test. That was 10 years ago. To this day, EVERY time that I ride, I remeber lessons that they taught me. I am so glad that I took that course!

Welcome Back!

While some of us here may seem crass and uncouth most of us do have new riders best interests at heart.

Glad you took and passed your MSF basic course. I took mine for the first time about a year ago, and even as an experienced rider I found the class very valuable.

Now on to the intermediate and advanced courses.

Yay! I'm glad you got the course! I know I was very glad I took the course and I'm probably kind of a broken record because I have a lot of people tell me they want to ride a bike but are scared or whatever, and my response is always to take the safety class. It really was that helpful for me.

Like you say, for a person who's sat on a bike, that opening bit with walking the bike seems tedious, but they want to make sure everybody's on the same page and they're taking absolute beginners into account. I figured they'd get to the good stuff soon enough, and we did.

Congrats on passing the course!

Learning is never done, look into taking a refresher course or some other advanced skills course at a frequent interval. Not only will it help remind you of some of the basics that may have slipped into non-use, but also an outside eye can spot bad habits that may have formed and help you correct them.

I've taken the BRC twice, a Total Control Advanced Riders Course (MSF equivalent one day course), the Streetmasters Motorcycle Precision Cornering Workshop, and now a motorcop Civilian Advanced Riders Course, plus a few seasons on the track. Learned something new every time and am able to improve my street riding immensely.

Keep up the good work!

All this palather and STILL no info on where one can take a good knitting course!

Congrats on taking & passing the riding course. You've taken at least two steps in the right direction: finding this forum and taking/passing the course. Understand though the "You can Die" will never end but can be greatly mitigated through practice, continuing training and respecting the comments of seasoned riders that have the respect of the riding community, particularly of those that are professional, trained instructors. Wants and needs are not always the same thing. Little, if anything has been a direct attack on you other than your apparent lack of humility and your interpretation of advice as personal attacks.
Welcome back to the conversations and may you have many, many years of safe & enjoyable riding and new friendships developed here.

I don't understand the experienced riders who say the class is a waste of time. It totally isn't. I had a 78-year-old man in my class who had been riding longer than I've been alive, and he actually had the most trouble in the class. He had picked up a lot of bad habits, and he didn't know how to go slow & kept putting his foot down doing slow turns. It's true what they say: anyone can go fast, but not everyone can go slow!

I know someone who routinely comments on those "I've been riding for X years!" type riders by saying "No, you've been repeating one year of riding X times."

Real riders know they are never done learning and they are always seeking to be better. I look up to those riders, I want to ride like them.
