Reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez has broken his right fibula in a dirt-track training session. Marquez, who had a remarkable 2013 campaign to win the MotoGP title as a rookie, will need up to a month to recover, which should just about make him available for the 2014 season opener March 23 in Qatar.

The Repsol Honda rider was brought to the Hospital Universitari Quirón Dexeus in Barcelona, Spain, for examiniation by Dr. Xavier Mir. An x-ray and CT scan confirmed Marquez suffered a spiral fracture to the right fibula but no further serious damage.

“The results showed no ligament damage or dislocation and no need to proceed with surgery,” says Dr. Mir. “I expect he will need 3-4 weeks to fully recover.”

Marquez has already started undergoing magnetic therapy but will be unable to put weight on his leg for two weeks. That rules Marquez out of next week’s pre-season test at Malaysia’s Sepang circuit and likely the Phillip Island test in Australia the following week.

“It was a really unfortunate accident that could happen to anyone at anytime,” says Marquez. “I was rushed to hospital and Dr. Mir treated me, thankfully there was no ligament damage and it seems like a clean break.”
