My favorites are "000" steel wool, or Soft Scrub on a blue Scotchbrite kitchen sponge.

Those might be good for the exhaust tubing but are they too harsh for the chrome pieces on the muffler?

000 steel wool is so fine that it won't scratch, and the Scotchbrite sponge is safe for Teflon cookware. Neither have ever done anything to my chrome.
