Give me bike ideas!

I'm about to sell my ninja in about 20 minutes. My budget is 4200 MAX. Now give me some ideas! I've had my heart set on a 650r but the one I wanted so badly just got sold today there aren't very many others in my area. I'm not opposed to a supersport but the insurance rates are insanity on them!!

Go to a Stealership and sit on what you like. Then look for used or older models on craigslist

If you're not opposed to a more 'aggressive' riding position, look for a later-model Suzuki SV650S. The fully-faired version is a hot looking bike and is comparable to the 650R in performance. I test-rode one, but would've had to put bar risers on it to live with it daily. Hell of a torque-monster down low, and sounded amazing with a Two-Brother's exhuast.

+1 on the SV650S but in order to better suggest bikes, we need to know what kind of riding position you're looking for.

Im down for sport or supersport! I love cbrs, 650's, zx6rs/ 636's, gsxrs, r6 and the fz6. I like all the main brand sports and supersports.

With your price range you can find (at least in san diego) bikes of that age with around 10k-30k miles all day.

That mileage scares the **** out of me even though it probably shouldn't. How long are these modern inline 4's lasting? And there are some pretty awesome rebuilt title'd bikes for super cheap. My uncle does that for a living, anyone have experience with rebuilts? I most likely wouldn't buy a rebuilt but it's an option.

Honestly you shouldn't be afraid of some mileage on a bike.

As long as you can check out service records and do a really good visual inspection you should be ok to get a bike to go 60K miles + (although personally, i would sell any bike climbing up to 50k)

The only thing is, I know how well I take care of my things, I just have to be very wary of how well some people SAY they took care of their bikes.

Agreed, but with a budget like your's and looking for a model year bike that you want some exceptions will have to be made. Just make sure you look well into whatever bike you buy.

I basically need to find someone who needs to unload the bike in a hurry due to financial problems. This is the perfect economy. I'm not rushing to get a bike, if it takes a week or two so be it.

How do you guys feel about bikes that have been dropped? How much does that bring the value down in your opinions? Because two of these bikes have been dropped in driveway scenarios

If you talked to them on the phone then I doubt they would. That's how it went when i bought my 250, called and asked a couple times, they said their list price was as low as they could go. When I went in there with a check in hand saying I would take the bike off their hands right now, they came down $300 and tossed in gloves+a helmet.

Couldn't they at least say "We'll see what we can do" Cus im not going to drive an hour away just to get turned down. So many sales guys seem to be straight up douches.

Yeah I hear you, the dealer i went to was an hour away. It seems like all of the smaller dealerships I went to had the douches, but the larger more reputable ones had super nice people...and high prices :P

Taxes are what's killing me. I can afford say 4400 but then like 7% taxes makes the bike almost another 400 dollars!

It's starting to sound that if I want a lower mileage newer bike, I'm going to have to go with Kawasaki. Either the 650r or zx 636. The 650 is around 4k for an 08, and people are asking 4800 for an 03-05 636 but I think I can talk them down to 4k

how to negotiate:
price A = look up average prices that the bike would sell for in perfect condition. selling for is not what its offered at. bikes are offered at at least 20% higher than what they sell for. so find out what it actually sells for.

price B = find every single thing wrong with the bike. every tiny scratch, blemish, ding, anything at all that means its not in perfect shape. add up the cost to replace those parts. chain doesnt look perfect? new chain. tires not brand new? new tires. needs an oil change, a brake fluid flush, a coolant flush, fork oil changed, wheels balanced, valve adjustment, new plugs... you want the largest possible number here. find out the prices for these things before hand and write it down on a piece of paper, then mark them off as you inspect the bike.

price C, your initial offer price = price A - price B. this is what you want to pay for the bike. it will be lower than what you will get it for. but showing how you got exactly to this number will force the seller to come down, realizing you know what you are talking about. they haven't sold the bike yet, so they haven't got an offer they like yet. so your offer is perfectly valid. he will come down, you will say some of the scratches dont matter and come up a little bit, you two meet somewhere in the middle, which if you planned it right is right about $4k.

before you make the offer, for each item, add half an hour of labour at $80 an hour labour, but put that number to the side, call it price D. this is just an extra bargaining chip that you can tell him you already threw away in if he doesn't like your first offer.

just remember. some people know that if they wait long enough a squid will pay too much for a bike simply because its the first acceptable bike they were able to make an offer on. some people simply wont negotiate. if they dont want to negotiate, leave your number and walk.

OKAY, so I saw this bike and my uncle owns a body shop and his expertise is salvage vehicles:

2006 ninja 636 Black with 6200 miles
Talked to the guy for about 25 minutes
It was voluntarily repo'd and it was crashed but has a clear title. All the plastics have been replaced and completely repainted. The tires are brand new and the brakes still have over 60% of life. The only things wrong is a cracked gauge lens ( how can I replace that?) and the exhaust tip is a little bent. The frame has no scratches and is not bent, neither are the forks. Engine block is fine with no leaks, and the engine cover has slight scratching but the bike runs completely fine. He wants $3600 for it, and I'm going to check it out and meticulously look it over, for anything. I'm goin to send pics to my uncle because hes the professional and if it checks out I'll try to talk him down to $3300? $3400? On the count of the cracked lens and bent exhaust tip.

What would you guys do?
