Private parts going to sleep while riding.

Somewhat devestated here. For the last few months has been getting worse and worse. After about 20 minutes of riding everything down there *groin complete*goes completely numb. After I get off of bike it takes 5 minutes or so for the feeling to come back. Have tried all different kinds of pants and underwear to no avail. Have an appointment with urologist on August 9. Any members here have similar/same problems? One of my bikes I have ridden for 27 years. I have had ninjette now for 3 or so. I have not had this problem before until recently. I fear this may take me off of motorcycles.

I've heard of that issue with bicycles, but never motorcycles. I just recently stopped riding my bicycle and sold it becuase I was having the same problem. Not sure what to tell you with regards to the motorcycle.

This is a recent issue. Is it only the 250 that causes it or does your other ride give you issues as well? If it's just the 250 then something is wrong with the way you are sitting and you ae putting too much pressure on the nerves down there. A new seat, a padded garment of some kind, and a minor adjustment to how you sit may help.

On my bicycle I would stand up for 10-15 seconds as soon as any numbness started to make itself known. I would also adjust my seating position as needed. I always wore padded shorts. It ended up not being enough in the end for me but maybe it'll help you out.

Do you have any pre existing lower back or hip injuries? Also how's your muscle conditioning in your hip, butt, and thigh region? Do you sit most of the day?

Well like I said one bike I have owned/ridden for 27 years. Never an issue until now. The ninjette I think I have ridden them for 3 years... never an issue. I DO have 2 herniated discs in lower back. The ninjette does not aggravate lower back- even on most long trips. It takes about 20 minutes to start "buzzing" on ninjette. My cx500 Honda only 10 minutes before. I don't want to get too graphic but lets just say its disconcerting. My age is 43. Ok health.... not without issues though either. As far as my job, it is very physical and sitting is a luxury I don't get. My lazy boy recliner at home puts no pressure on back or butt.

I have had "monkey butt burn" before that is not what this is. I feel very comfortable on ninjette... until I can't feel anything. Lets just say twig and berries are not there anymore.

Haha this used to happen to me. I'd get done riding and my ass and balls and half my jiglet would be asleep. And then afterwards it tingles so good. Then it just stopped, so idk break the seat in some more! I wonder if my new 250 will do it, I should go try it

Try to stay out of the crush zone, that's what I call the area between the highest part of the seat and the tank (for obvious reasons). I had my seat re-padded so it is a bit more level and I can sit further back on the seat. Also for longer rides I have a cheap gel seat pad that works great.

how do you sit on your ninja and how tall are you? I make sure to keep the balls of my feet on the pegs and grip my tank with my knees. keeps pressure off your Richard Nixon. I'm about 6 foot and this has worked to stop any sort of pressure in that area.

A bad passenger will screw it all up though :/

6ft 4, 285lbs- I just dont understand why this is NOW happening. Never issues before. Plenty of "tennis ball court" room, as I sit away from tank a bit because I have extra long arm reach.

I would agree with seat padding sitting position theory if these bikes were new to me.

Out of all the bikes I've ridden (and I've ridden many), the ninja 250's seat is the least comfortable seat (not talking about position/ergo). Hell, my current bike's seat with original (40 year old) foam was more comfortable than that vinyl-wrapped wood plank.

I'd definitely look into an aftermarket seat, preferably Corbin.

I've found myself getting into bad posture when I'm not actively paying attention how I ride. It's something I've found myself and a lot of other riders fall into. If it's not you putting pressure on different areas than you usually do than I wouldn't know what else it is. I wouldn't really know what else could do it besides a real medical problem.

Ah yes, sleepy pee-pee. Common to bicycle riders and I'd imagine more common to motorcyclist than we are admitting.

It is caused by prolonged pressure on the perineum. Here is an article about it from Medicinenet: http://www.medicinenet.com/script/ma...ticlekey=84072

If I am riding longer distances I wear a pair of bicycle shorts, the ones with the chamois in the crotch, and they help out a lot. In the article it says that a softer seat may make the problem worse.

My 2 cents.

Jeff

It can be very disconcerting to have something that usually has a LOT of sensation go numb. Don't feel alone. I've ridden long distances & didn't realize it was happening, stepped off the bike and was completely numb from the top of my balls all the way back to the fudge factory. Very un-nerving. It also happens occasionally if I sit the wrong way in my desk chair.

I thought it was blood flow....interesting to learn that it's also a nerve issue. I rode a bicycle EVERYWHERE I went from age 6-15 and never had any numbness.

It sucks getting old. Nothing flows like it did when we were teenagers! ;-)

Very good article. Hope I don't do permanent damage. Maybe my weight is putting too much pressure on it. That is one variable that HAS changed. I have put on 25lbs since getting married 2 years ago. Still 38" waist, but getting tight. I find the lil ninja seat VERY comfortable for me. Still gonna get professional opinion. Article says that it can cause permanent ed. Don't need that. Not much left after sex and motorcyles.

I did my first 24-hr rally on a ZX-12R. Even though it had a Corbin seat, I was very surprised with this fun and unexpected side effect at the end of that ride. Lasted about a day, and hasn't come up since (so to speak). Frightening at the time, but it was fortunately temporary. Was a strong incentive to get a more comfortable long-distance bike.

My jewels will get numb from time to time but that is probably due to them being crushed on the tank hahaha

You mention tight pants.

When I ride in my almost skinny jeans (keep your trap shut jiggles) I notice a bit of this numbness when they ride up and um, get a little tight. I get up for a second and shift my weight around and shift my pants down to where they should be. Maybe you just need different pants? Not to be rude with that suggestion, please don't take it that way. I just know that when I wear baggier pants I don't have that issue.

Jeff is right with the bicycle shorts though. I ride a road bike and mountain bike a ton and I love my padded spandex, no matter how goofy it looks

I used to work with pressure ulcer patients and air-filled seat pads were really common as a relief to pressure-related issues. I've noticed a few segmented air-filled seats on the market. What about one of those?

If you're getting pressure in a particular area, you could consider deflating a segment or two to relieve pressure on that area. Of course, that will increase blood flow to that area too, so it could aggravate hemorrhoids or other blood flow related issues if you're not careful.

Disclaimer: this is not medical advice. Consult your urologist for actual advice.

Tic toc tic toc 7 more days to urologist. 43 isn't too old to ride. I have ridden with many people over 70 years old. I hope this doesn't take me off of bikes. The article above says that there can be permanent damage/ED. Also can cause less than satisfactory big O's.... I have got a trip to Prudoe Bay in the back of my head that I want to run one day, hope I don't have to give up that dream. Anyway, thanks for all of the info. Will share results/advice doc gives me here.

Sorry to hear about this, guys. I actually have the opposite problem. My private parts wake up while riding.
