Looks like you'll be swinging through Newnan. LMK if you need to crash... for sleep/shelter. Please keep your bike in one piece.

I've done J-to-I and I-to-F a few times.

I definitely hope to keep it in one piece!

How was SoCal to Georgia? Where'd you sleep and such? Motels?

Did it without sleeping last time, but don't follow my lead! After weaving all over the road, I did get a Motel 6 east of Dallas where I intended to sleep for three hours, but I realized that the arrival time on my dog's flight was a different time zone than the departure time and that I had three hours less to make it there in time. I took a much-needed shower, rested for 30 mins, and hit the road again.

I left San Diego and arrived in Atlanta 45 hours later (less than two days). I visited my niece on the beach last because I made it a point to start from the coast and get on the start of Interstate 8 before my journey.

Another time was Metro ATL to SoCal in December and I didn't make much progress each day after waiting for things to warm up and ruining my cellphone in the rain. I stayed at any motel under $45. Three stops: Lake Charles, LA; Junction, TX; and Demming, NM.

Never EVER go counter-clockwise around the USA. It will reverse time and potentially mess up delivery times on packages ordered from China. That would seriously mess A LOT of us up. Not to mention Jiggles mail-order bride from the other side. =/

Yeah, planning on sleeping.

So, not too hard to find motel under $45?

Appreciated!

I think once this gets closer(and if I can actually do it) I will post planning details as I work on them. I will accept any help. Poor college student lol, but I do hate imposing. I want to also see where I can camp on the trip. Anyone know of any good logging mapping sites that list campgrounds?

I think most of the logging is done in the Northwest. You could camp up there but I believe they get a lot of rain in that part of the country.

Canada is a better country for logging since the population is relatively small and the forests comprise 45% of the country. You could probably camp in any of these forests where they log.

On both accounts, be aware of bears.

Only way to do it!

I love camping though. I do backpack a decent bit on my own.

Working on combining bike + trips. Hopefully this trip would be a good way to do that.

1. Are you going to Juarez on purpose?
2. I will give @Jiggles a dollar if he makes a google trip map that looks like a penis, and I'll through in another if one of the balls is in Texas.
3. Tent camping on a bike is awesome. Lots of good advice here: ADVrider.

That would be one awesome trek. When I was travelling, I crossed paths with a guy from Germany who did a coast to coast trip on an old BMW dual sport that he bought when he landed. Other than hotels or motels, you can do some camping and when you need a bed and shower you might consider hostels or university dorms if you're doing this in the summer months. Just make sure you don't share a bed or shower with Jiggles.

Book idea...

Years ago I read a book entitled "Blue Highways", by William Least Heat-Moon. Very interesting autobiography about a man that circumnavigates the country in a Ford van. I would highly recommend reading it as mental precursor to what you are considering.

Not planning on going to Mexico.

That's just the route that Google Maps drew up from Phoenix to N'Orleans.

1. Good call on Juarez. Murder capital of the world, and rape capital, and kidnap capital . . .
2. @Jiggles - need email for paypal.
3. Throw not through. I was very tired from pulling all-nighter at work.

When you head north through georgia.....best campground in the southeast is Vogul State Park.
You will be real close to Helen, GA which is a biker mecca, particularly in october. There are tons of waterfalls, and the Appalachian Trail runs right through this area.

Here's what it looks like....

I read a thing over on the sohc4 forum a while back about a kid who basically spent an entire summer on his bike. He kept a journal the whole time. It's an amazing story. He pretty much roughed it the whole time, aside from staying with some family for a bit and having a hotel room given to him by some dudes on business. He had all sorts of crazy mishaps along the way, but he made it out alive. I'll see if I can find it to post on here soon.

Updated plans. My friend is moving to Folsom, CA and we are planning on riding the bike cross-country there. We want to go as cheap as possible and find free camping or couch surf. Tips or ideas?
