new chain & sprockets at 5000...

Why would someone replaced the chain and sprockets at 5000 miles?
Does that mean he beat the hell out of the bike?
On average, when should the chain and sprockets be replaced?
Thanks,
Tin

When I took my bike into a Kawa dealership and they looked over the bike, they said the one thing that needed to be replaced was the chain. According to them, chain life is around 7,500 miles (I had 15.5k on the chain). Not sure if this is completely true or not, but that's what was told to me by a Kawa dealer.

hmmm... regular maintenance. what a concept!

nothing will kill a chain and sprockets faster than improper/lack of maintenance. if it shows they haven't been taken care of, what does that tell you about the other maintenance the bike should have had in it's lifetime that you can't see?

one other possibility is that they were replaced for a gearing change?

the bike is 2 hrs away.
i'm too lazy to drive.
lolz.
It's an 03 gixxer alstare edition with 4900 miles. List price is 3800. Willing to sell for 3000.
05 R6 with 16k miles. List price is 4000. Lowest would take is 3400.
Both have minor scratches.
What do you think?

Tin...glad your looking at getting another bike...and so soon

Dont forget, in NJ the prices will drop once riding season is over. But if you got the itch...might as well scratch it now

Hey Matt,
Which one should I go for?
I like the 05 r6 headlight a lot.
The gixxer has less mileage.
Should I be concerned with less mileage?

Whats the condition on both bikes? Prices? Which bike had the chain and sprocket changed at 5000?

I had an '05 R6 for awhile, definitely a fun bike. Fantastic on the track, not so much on the street. $3400 is a very good price for one, and to be honest sounds like the bike may not be in the best condition.

Opps was that post about the bikes right above mine and I didnt see it? my bad

I have 3 buddys who have 05 R6's and they love the bike although I don't think they are using it to its full potential as they had trouble keeping up with me when we went out to the pocono's(all their first bike and were scared of the power if they weren't on a straight highway) I have a thing against gixxers and the people who typically (or atleast in my head ) ride them but thats just me.

If the sprocket and chain that were changed at 5000 miles was due to poor maintenance, id stay away from that bike, whichever one it is

Good luck

You're right about the condition. It does need a new fork seal.
I'll keep looking.
Matt is right. Once the weather get a little colder the price should drop.
I miss my 250 and riding...

Not only is proper maintenance important but you also need to do periodic inspections as listed in the maintenance manual to check chain stretch and sprocket wear. If a dealer / mechanic tells you that something needs to be replaced have them tell you why. Have them give you specs. This will help you spot problems for the next time.
