Chopping stock exhaust?

Anyone done this? It seems to be popular with other exhausts and I think it could be a cool, cheap way to change the look of your bike. Any rules of thumb about how much to cut? Anyone have a guide?

Cutting the exhaust open or running an open header will drop power. And it is very loud.

It's not exactly what you're looking for, but a user on the ninja250faq forums had put two supertrapp exhausts on his bike which are shorter than stock. Maybe this will give you an idea of what it looks like visually.

That does look nice, though brings up another question. I know that changing the overall length of the pipes affects power but, is there a way to conserve power and end up with a 2-1 exhaust that ends under the engine?
