2010 Ninja 250R

I am looking at that bike as a potential first bike for me. I think starting on a 250 is a good idea, from everything I have read. Only thing about that one is I messaged the guy and asked any issues etc, and he said only thing is a crack in front left fairing. I know nothing about motorcycles etc, is this a big issue? I asked a follow up on how it happened, and if he could take a pic. Awaiting his reply. Any advice etc would be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot! I look forward to joining you guys on the road! ---- He replied, " The crack is from being laid down/dropped. I did it in my yard actually (first bike). I have been riding it for the past 6 months like that, as its only cosmetic. The brand new-matched OEM fairing would run around $240. If you're serious, I can send some close up pictures of the crack." What do you guys think? Thanks. |

Definitely get some pics of the damage to see if he's being truthful about it being a simple drop vs. laying it down riding. If there are major scuffs along with it, he laid it down riding and I'd be more wary of other damage. I'm already wondering if he's trying to hide something since he didn't even bother to mention the damage in the ad. Granted, the bike could still be mechanically sound. Seeing it in person is important. Simple cracks from dropping wouldn't be an issue though as it's just cosmetic and wouldn't affect the performance. Most riders have been there

I asked for some pics, now just waiting on those. He is kind of far away, so hopefully can see and get all info before committing etc. I would hate for my first bike to be riddled with a lot of unseeable issues to the untrained eye, thus my reason for coming here. I appreciate it, and will post pics as soon as he sends them.

I would try not to commit before actually seeing the bike and test riding it since sellers aren't always truthful or knowledgeable about their bike. Bring someone who knows about bikes to help you too if you need. Yeah it sucks to drive a distance and leave empty-handed, but it's better than ending up with something you might regret. 15,000 miles is major service mark so definitely look into service records.

I would say those cracks are not really anything to worry about. Get those service records though. The first bike I bought was just past the 15,000 mi. mark and had none of the service done. I ended up needing to replace a lot of things though that was also partially due to the age of the bike. I'm actually at that point now on my current bike and it really is a lot of stuff if someone isn't keeping up with it.

It looks to me like those cracks were caused from the front turn signal pushing into the fairing. You'll find that is a common place for the fairings to show damage since those stupid lights stick out so far they punch right in on a drop. Happened on both sets of fairings I have.
If you've never ever owned a bike before, I will warn you that Growler exhaust is ***ing LOUD! See if he has the stock pipe still otherwise you may find yourself scrambling through eBay for a replacement. The ninja is very quiet normally until she's wide open, that growler is head aching inducing from start up. And definitively everything that @tfkrocks has said.

15k is a major service mark, have service records?
To which he responded, " No. Other than standard maintenance (changing oil and break pads), it hasn't been in the shop." Status quo? And also talking to this guy, http://chattanooga.craigslist.org/mcy/3989240962.html Although I guess I'd prefer the ninja, but what do you guys think? Thanks! ps. just in case it is relevant, I do not think it matters honestly but figured I'd see. I am 6'3, 210. But I realize 250 etc prob isnt different in size but that much if at all from the others, just in case though lol. |

"According to the 250 owners manual, services should be at 12k and 18k miles. When the bike got new tires in April nothing was noted as needing to be changed."

Yeah 15k miles is definitely a service mark for this bike and it's got some big stuff like valve check/adjustment, swing arm service, steering bearings service, and more... Won't be cheap unless you can do the service yourself. See if you can get a quote for the cost of the service. If you can talk the seller down in price because of it then you could potentially get a good deal. Otherwise i'd pass.
As for the CBR250, if you like it, it might not be too bad a deal since it's still new and the only thing it might need is the first service which is mostly the oil change. However, you are on a ninja 250/300 forum so we could be biased :P I personally don't care for the CBR250. |

If it will make it about even with the prices of other 250s in the area after getting the 15k mi. service, then it could be worth it. I don't know the average prices in your area though.
