250 ninja trike

I cut up my ninja to make a trike.Single seater using the original front forks, the motor and the gas tank. It'll have a suicide clutch with the shifter.

Going to redo the shifting rod. I don't like the way it looks and it flexes too much

Ninja trike update. Got the chain tensioner built, remade the shifter rod setup , and currently trying to install the headlight cluster. And to answer the question about steel, it's 120wall 1in square tubing. Here are better pics

Your chain is being ruined by lack of lube and moisture!

Great project! You can learn a lot by designing and building yourself.
I am afraid though, speaking of driving off of just one rear wheel, you may have a substantial pull to the freewheel side during acceleration and cruse. Under deceleration it will tend to pull towards the drive wheel. This may make for some pretty unsettling handling caractaristics.

I've built another trike, with the same set up. It worked just fine. The effect should lessen with a longer wheelbase. And it doesn't have a hundred horsepower... Lol

Whew, glad to hear that. The one that was on my 250 when I got it was worse than that one. The guy I bought it from said he didn't know why it had gotten rusty.

We had a big storm come through vegas a few days ago and rusted up the chain and frame. I understand the concern, so many riders do not know how lube and properly tighten a chain, and then they wonder why it didn't last long LOL

Don't worry, there will most definitely be a video of the trike in action. I can't wait to ride it myself. It's killing me everytime I think I get closer to finishing it I still have a hundred more things to do.

I have to be honest I am surprised that it would not pull, but it sounds like you have been around that block before.
I look forward to seeing the finished product!

I had an 07 ninja that my buddy crashed that we turned into a Streetfighter and we decided to make it into a trike by just making the rectangle for the swingarm and put an axle into tires on it. I learned a lot of lessons from that monstrosity.

Caveat: I'm not a real engineer (though I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night).

It looks to me like there's a weak point in the design, at the front end of the "bedstead" frame. You've got the head tube braced to a pair of longitudinal tubes along the centerline, and a set of semi-triangulated trusses along the side rails.

But to my eye, the sum total looks like it's be pretty flexy in an area where there will be significant bending loads. Seems like there should be additional triangulation going on to add rigidity to the whole.

If the frame flexes significantly around the Y axis (X being longitudinal, Z being vertical) it'll affect geometry.

Interested to see the ride report, and how well it deals with bumps.

I agree with your diagnosis however the frame is pretty stiff now but will still need some additional support and different areas just to be safe.

Stiff is relative to load. It can experience 8-10gs easily when hitting bumps. Fatigue is more concern over time.

Well, I am no engineer however I've been building street-legal custom frames from the ground up for a few years now and I live by one rule, ( IF IT BREAKS I DIE). This way I already know it needs to work no matter what because my life is on the line. That's good motivation to get it right.

You build "street legal custom" bike frames out of mild steel square tubing? You don't have any kind of lateral bracing anywhere as @adouglas pointed out. And those two longitudinal tubes that are the only thing holding the headtube up (not to mention the seat and whosever ass is in it) aren't even fully welded because you didn't leave enough clearance between them. Also your rear axle bearings look like those flimsy sheet metal swivels you'd find on an office chair. You don't think those'll just crumple sideways in a high speed turn?

Yes I do build all of my vehicles out of square tubing they hold up just fine for the purpose I built them. I'm confused about why you say that the bars holding the head are not finished by the seat? And despite what it looks like my rear bearings are not office chair quality, they are sealed bearings attached to a thick plate of steel, they're not going anywhere in a turn.

Akima, I was going to use one of those aluminum rolled tanks but since the other gas tank holds 4.5 gallons and had a locking gas cap I figured I'd just use it instead
