2012 Formula 1 - Official Thread

Ok, its only official because I say it is, but I did this the last couple years, and thought I should do it again this year.

Here is a quick look at notable technical/rules changes for 2011
- Blown diffusers are now banned. Rules that dictate exhaust location have been amended to help prevent creative ways around this rule. Creative engine mapping was also prohibited, and a general clause about blowing the exhaust over any part of the car to create downforce was installed.
- Reactive ride height systems banned.
- Inseason testing is again allowed after being banned in 2009. There will be an organized midseason test in Mugello, and teams are allowed only 15 days of in season testing.

Now for the team lineups and schedules

Oops my mistake. Switched the order of the names, but not the numbers. Button is 3 this year.

Also added pictures from the McLaren launch.

Force India unveiled, and Ferrari unveiled online. They had to cancel the actual unveiling due to snow.

Ferrari has a weird nose.

Lotus and Sauber launches are up. More stepped noses. Looks like McLaren is the only car without one so far.

Added Toro Rosso. Red Bull also "launched" but no official pictures. The only picture shown looks like a sketch.

First tests are over. What have we learned? Nothing really, because who knows what kind of runs each team was on. I'm excited for the season to start.

Narain Karthikeyan got the final spot at HRT, and Jarno Trulli has been replaced by Vitaly Petrov at Caterham.

Anyone going to any of the races this year?

Monaco is always around my birthday and I've been to it a few times, besides the beautiful women are there, Montreal is always fun and it is closer plus great women and food, Valencia is at a great spot in Spain and the food there is wonderful, as are the women, and Austin is the closest (to me) but I'm not sure they have it together , but those great Texas ladies could make it worth it. Decisions decisions!

I wish I could. I was hoping to get to the USGP, but probably won't happen this year. Maybe next year I can make it to both US races.

I would love to go to Monaco though, or pretty much any other European race.

Yeah looks like it could be a close one.

Isn't it good that the prettiest car won? I know everyone was trying to push the rules with the step nose, but they are just downright ugly. Apparently when the FIA realized what teams were doing they thought about making a mandatory cover to hide the step, but since it was so close to the start of the year they would have had to have unanimous consent from the teams to make that change, and of course they didn't do that.

Really? I heard it differently, that the teams wanted to put a non-structural cover on it to make it look sleeker, but the FIA refused?

Practice at 2am is killing me. Last weekend I was so tired between bike week races, Supercross, F1, Sebring, and Nascar I don't think I slept more than 3 hours a night.

Alex, for some strange reason (for me) it's only good if it's live.

Great qualifying (at 4 am).

Race should be a good one. Kimi (Lotus) and Michael (MB) are doing well. I hope Button stuffs his teammate (whoever he is) on the start again.

Ferrari is doing......terrible.

I can't wait until 2am (GP2). That should wake me up for the 3:30am F1.

At least Supercross is at a proper hour. I don't understand why the world doesn't run on my time.

It can be exhausting being a race fan!!!

I am excited for this race and to see how the race in on a dedicated circuit not a street course. There are more places to pass at Sepang and hopefully we will see more. Glad Vettel is at least temporarily dethroned for the sake of competition.

A very unexpected race. I was really pulling for Perez once I realized Hamilton couldn't catch him. Too bad he threw away a certain race win.

I wonder if Felipe's on suicide watch?

Everyone in Italy wants your head.
You can't blame it on the car because they gave you a brand-new chassis.
Your teammate wins while the best you can do is come in 15th.
The guy rumored to be first in line for your seat winds up on the podium.

I think he can hear the fat lady clearing her throat.

I don't buy that. It's one thing to catch the guy in front... it's quite another to pass him, especially a driver of Fernando's caliber and experience. Even if your car is faster and even if you've got DRS working for you.

Given enough time, he might have found the right moment. However, there just weren't enough laps left.

He had a bunch of laps, he would have gotten by. Alonso was a sitting duck.

If Perez passed in the DRS zone, he could have made a 1 sec. gap before the activation zone on the next lap.

Nico Nico Nico, and Michael!

Reminds me of 1955 in Italy. It was a sunny day for Mercedes. El Maestro, Juan Manuel Fangio, my idol from Argentina (a place well know for beautiful women) puts the car on pole then leads every lap but one ( Stirling Moss got lucky, also set fastest lap).

I wonder how much longer Massa has an F-1 ride. There is always NASCAR.
