Gearing vs mileage

I read some folks are happy w 15/39 so my 15/40 should be fine. I'm curious about what has been found in fuel usage. My change was mostly for engine life span even if economy suffered. It seems silly to have a 6 speed machine that will putt along @ 30 in top.

I'm running 15/42 and love it. 6th gear becomes essentially an overdrive. I don't track fuel usage on a vehicle that gets 70 M.P.G but I can tell you that I hit reserve at about 135 miles.

Was that a typo Bill? If you're getting 70 mpg, you should be going neary 300 miles before reserve.

Was that on your 250? I don't see a 300 on your bio.

I don't have any 300-specific info for you either, but I have altered the gearing of my SV650n by adding 1T to the countershaft, which dropped the RPMs about 500. It put the engine in a much smoother spot for Interstate cruising, but didn't net much of a MPG gain - maybe 1. It still gets over 50+ MPG at 70+ either way.

I have heard of more significant improvements from adding a larger windscreen (mine is a naked, so it's not much of an option - plus I don't mind the wind)

Gearing shouldn't change MPG because air-resistance is still same at same speed. Thus power-required to move bike at that speed will still be same. With taller-gearing and lower-RPMs, you have to open throttle a little more to generate same power for same speed.

True that you're closer to max-VE of engine at lower-RPMs and have lower pumping-losses with larger throttle-opening. But difference isn't that significant.

I'm using a 16x45t on my newgen and that lowered cruising RPM by about 1000 and makes for a more relaxed ride.

Yep. I checked the internet. I guess about 58 M.P.G. is correct. The 70 M.P.G. must be from some Kawasaki propaganda piece. I really don't care personally. When I have to worry about my bike's M.P.G., the cost of 1.5 quarts of oil and the price of 12 oz. of brake fluid I'll probably be eating Rival dog food for dinner. Now my gas guzzeling Pontiac Montana is another matter.

My daughter got 69 mpg when I checked just after I got the 250, so it's not just hype. I think she normally gets somewhere around 250 to 300 miles to reserve.

I too have +1 on SV & 250. Don't like screaming it to cruise. My old Guzzi Sport would do almost 50 in first, only 3k & 60mpg @ 60mph, but didn't like 3rd below 40. It would out top end SOHC 750s but only 14+ 1/4 mile. I remember reading about the factories gearing US market bikes lower for acceleration & maybe 55 speed in 80s.

JacRyan is right. Until you start making aero changes like Vic (greenaero) or you're caning it every time you ride it, you shouldn't see massive fuel economy changes. I always seem to get my best fuel economy in vehicles when I'm flowing a good curvy backroad in the 50 mph region. It's odd because I'm also not shy about using the skinny pedal.

135 miles to reserve????

Reserve kicks in when you've burned 4 gallons on the pregen. The reserve is that last 0.75 gallons. That's about 34 mpg. Are you jetted that rich or are you ham fisted? Only time I've gotten mileage that bad was on track days because the bike lives the weekend with the throttle at it's stop.

Hmmm. Now you've got me wondering about my memory. I'm pretty sure it's 135 to reserve. Shoot, now I don't know for sure. I'm running 110 mains so that shouldn't be a problem, and I drive like the old fart I am (69). Hell maybe it's 235 miles. It's gonna drive me nuts until I'm riding again so I can find out.

In those conditions I once saw over 60 MPG from the SV.

sv650

The 15/40 was so good on 300 that I did 17/44 on SV when it needed new chain. Love the change!

I just went up Rt 25 on the eastern shore of Michigan. Cool, wide open road. No cops. 75 - 80 M.P.H. most of the way. I normally get about 235 miles before I hit reserve. I got over 255 miles before I gassed-up - and didn't hit reserve.

Go figure.

I may go to 16x43 or 42t next. Traffic really moves around here when there's an opening. Still a little too high-strung and buzzy for commuting even with 16x45t. MPG is still about 61mpg after going from 14 to 16x45. Although aero is king and if I tuck for entire ride, it really improves!

Is that +2 on the countershaft?

I have a +1 countershaf with the stock rear sprocket. Just did 400 mi at right about 80 MPH and got 50 MPG. IIRC, it's now 6000 RPMs at an indicated 80 (actual is about 3 MPH less at that speed).

Mine is a '06 naked, single plug, F.I., 70-series front tire (helps correct the speedo), slightly taller bars, slip-on muffler, 87 octane - no ethanol.

On the last tank I couldn't get 87, so I ran Preminum no ethanol (which I never do). Got about 10% worse mileage. That's the only time it's been under 50. I don't think there were any other major variables like wind or speed that could have affected it that much.

Gotta love that mid-range torque.

What's the best MPG the SV has done with that gearing? S or N model?
