Here has been my problem with the cheap ones;

1. Between the wind and rain, the top develops a "pocket" where water can pool.
2. More wind and rain just makes the pool bigger
3. Eventually the weight of the water + force of the wind, folds the canopy side rails and it all comes down.

The higher quality popups work much better because, the tops are well fitting and the support tubing is better at preventing pooling. Between the anchor points at the legs, and better overall structure, they fight the wind much better than the average popup.

TLDR;
When you are under a popup, look up! if you see an entire support skeleton throughout (not just on the sides) and a well fitting canvas on that skeleton, it's simply better.

my
Yeah, I'd to see at least 1" chromoly tubing on the small canopies and at least 1.5" on the larger ones. Way better strength-to-weight ratio than all aluminiums except for some exotic 7000-series. That might at least survive a tumble and flight downwind. Mine has the cross-braces to stiffen and keep cover angled to roll off water. I suspect it'll last 3-4 years max and I would've gotten my $59 worth of use out of it.

Contacted them and it has the exact same thin aluminium legs and plastic joints as all the others. They won't even give me a wind-rating that this can withstand because they don't want the liability.. I suspect most of the extra cost is in the flame-resistant covering as frame is exactly same as Costco models.

I've been trying to find a video I saw several years ago of pit row at a race track when a serious gust came along. One by one in the span of about 5 seconds, about 30 canopies went into the sky. Gas cans, coolers and used tires were flying through the air. The only canopies that didn't go were the ones that were anchored to something seriously heavy on all 4 corners.

Okay, so I bought the 3-person Connectent. Weather FINALLY broke this past weekend so I set it up.

Initial impressions:

- I have a 12x12 canopy and the tent is made for a 10x10. I compensated for this by rigging simple paracord loops a foot long that I attach to the canopy frame everywhere the tent hooks up. An extra step but no biggie.
- Tent takes up exactly half the canopy footprint, which leaves plenty of room for bike, table, chairs, cooler etc. at night.
- After initial setup and the inevitable lessons learned, it takes less than five minutes to rig the tent start to finish, working alone. That includes collapsing the canopy legs to reach the hooks at the peak. You'll probably need something to stand on.
- Quality is what you'd expect for the price. Floor is made of poly tarp material. I'm going to lay a second tarp down under it, because that stuff will inevitably get holes in it.
- LOTS of ventilation. Top is open mesh. Windows are huge.
- Bag is too small (they always are) and there's little point in trying to cram the thing back into it. Just use a tote.
- 8-foot headroom! 'nuff said.

My idea of just leaving the mattress and bedding in the tent, uncorking the mattress, loosely rolling the whole shebang up and chucking it in the car for the day looks like it's going to work.

Photos eventually.

I ended up getting 4-man ConnecTent that doesn’t occupy any canopy space.

Extremely palatial inside with room for queen mattress and family of 4! Can even stand up in it!

Footprint is actually large. Going to try it at Laguna Seca this weekend.

The good thing about securing your tent to the canopy is you will know if it blows away during the night, and maybe the added ballast of your sleeping bones will help keep it on the ground.

Should add up to an interesting night if it does, just remember to relax your body when you land.

From my experience with tentage and strong wind gusts, unless its tied to an immovable object its gonna fly.

This is the new "model home" for L.A. and S.F. right?

Tent Cities !!!

I remember at university, there were students renting out plots of backyards to pitch their tents to live in!

Heck, I should post ads, might be able to fetch at least $500/m for this sucker!

Hey, we could start a company "Rent-A-Tent". For the really impoverished we could offer a rent to own program (free bong with every new contract).

Got to use the tent that fits under the canopy for the first time last weekend. Worked great.

As you can see the tent, which is meant for a 10x10 straight-leg canopy, fits well inside my 12x12. Look closely and you can see how I've made that work by rigging loops of paracord for all of the tent's attachments.

The dirt/gravel in the background is very hard (doesn't take well to stakes) and also covered with sharp stones. The other style that hangs off the edge of the canopy, and which requires staking, wouldn't work well under these conditions.

Setup and takedown were both very easy and I still had half the canopy footprint available.

I did put down an 8x10 heavy-duty tarp first to protect the tent floor from water, dirt and unnecessary wear. I expect I'll be replacing that tarp from time to time.

I also have these great chairs that keep all the allergies away from you at the track. No more sneezing and sniffling for me.
Great post! The picture looks like the pollen is thick in the air.

It was what the Irish call a "soft day." Heavy fog in the morning, low 40s.

Fortunately the track was dry by the first session, though it was still cool and cloudy.

By afternoon it was glorious, warm sunshine.
