Unhappy Sailariel will be away for a couple weeks

My mother passed away this morning after a long illness. She was 97. I need to make a road trip--by cage- to Central New York to help my sister handle funeral arrangements and the usual mundane chores associated with a death.

I should be back in a couple of weeks. Ride Safe, Alex

Thank you all very much. I will have a good weather window on Wednesday. Like all good sailors, I move between fronts. I expect a "Perfect" 10 hour drive. Mom is in a better place. Her suffering is over and the family can feel good that we enjoyed her company for 97 years. You really can't ask for more.

Alex, you have my condolences.

Your mum was 97! I guess that means you'll be posting here for a long time (which is a good thing).

Thanks all,
I still haven't left. It is really blowing here with the passing of the front. The drive tomorrow should be perfect.

Thanks to the internet, I have been doing notifications. My kid sister, the biker, is flying in from Austria tomorrow. She actually managed to snag a flight round trip for $400. It may have something to do with the political events we have seen recently. I suspect that people are afraid to fly.

I have even managed to arrange for the Wake to be on Friday, and the Funeral Mass for Saturday. Now all I have left to do is get a caterer for Saturday afternoon. My sisters would be too messed up to deal with that.

It is at times like these that I really appreciate my Army training as a medic.
I was taught to deal with the problem and keep things together. After everything settles, I can deal with it.

It is really amazing that my older sister has only seen one person die. She has had a very sheltered life.

Decided to cut my visit short. Certainly wakes and burials take their toll on a person emotiomally.

I have no problem supporting the family in these trying times--support is one thing--bickering among siblings is another.

The burial is tomorrow. Unless things change--and I doubt that they will, I'll be heading back to Maine shortly afterward.

In all honesty, I would much rather spend time with my wife and her elderly father who lives with us. It's a good thing that my wife had to stay home to care for her dad. She should have to put up with this drama.

I find it totally ridiculous, and certainly a waste of energy, to be arguing about type of casket, shape of the urn for the ashes, open or closed casket, the wording of the obituary, and it goes on and on. I thought that I had eliminated all this falderal when I prepaid her funeral 15years ago. Everything was in place. All that was required was one phone call to the funeral director and everything would be set in motion. I even wrote the obit--all one had to do was add the date. Couldn't be any easier. I guess some people need to pole vault over mouse turds.

I'm sorry about all of that, Alex. I find that funerals bring out the worst in families....and the bigger the family the worse it gets. I've been through a number of funerals already, unfortunately, and the worst part about the whole thing is having to watch everyone argue and bicker over stupid crap.

Again, I'd like to extend to you my deepest condolences. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

James, Thank you. I'll look you up when I ride to Toronto this summer. I heard that there will be a bicycle race (Time Trials) sometime this August. Our team plans to participate. I am anxious to see how competitive the Fuji I built up will be.

i'm sorry to hear that, funerals do bring families closer together, but when you have people that don't know how to express their emotions it can get nasty. Stay strong Alex.

Good to hear she could make it

Hopefully they realize the nitty gritty details shouldn't matter so much at a time like this and you should just be there for each other.

97 years old is quite an accomplishment these days..be proud and stay strong!!!

Paulette, you are a sweetheart and I love you. You really understand. It has been hard here. We are buried in snow, and it is hard for me to escape. I will get out of here--hopefully by Thursday. I see a weather window. I just want to be away from all this stuff and deal with my loss in my own way by myself. This scenario seems to bring out the worst in people--I refuse to participate. Sure would be nice if I could deal with this without the participation of other family members. At this point they are a PITA. (am learning the text language)It is not a pleasant thing to go through--amazing how nasty people get in this situation, All I want to do is hug my wife and go for a motorcycle ride. It does not look like this will happen.
