Is it possible to start it without the stock gas tank?

Is it possible to start a ninja 250 motor without the stock gas tank/petcock valve? I have a little 1 gallon tank with a nipple that I hooked the gas line too and closed off the vacuum port and before I could even attempt to start it gas was leaking out of the air box. Can someone please guide me on how to do this or is it a carb problem?

any help is appreciated

Your float valves are bad, so the bowls are overflowing.

So if I fix that, and do it again just as I described, gas shouldn't leak out?

Yes, it is possible.

That shouldn't have happened.

Do you have pics to show us your arrangement?

I would try keeping the level of the fuel the same as in the tank, as well as keeping an open vent.

My little tank has a vent on the top but try to put it about the same height as the tank was next time I try. Thanks!

You are welcome

Yes, if you place it too high or if the little tank develops some internal pressure, you could overcome the force of the floats that keep the valves from allowing flow into the bowls.

Never thought of that! I guess a fuel pump may be out of the question....
