The goal of Snell 2010 was to marry the best of both and allow helmet manufactures to target a single standard (theirs) and be safe worldwide. The same transferability can't be said for DOT or ECE helmets, each of which might not pass Snell testing.
A good point about SNELL M2010 helmets. The new SNELL M2010 standard allows these SNELL certified helmets the opportunity to now qualify for ECE certification testing. They still have to pass the test and it's no guarantee as there is still some differences in testing between the two standards, however, SNELL might claim that this should not be an issue as they have the strictest standards in the world.

The reason why SNELL M2005 helmets didn't qualify for ECE certification was due to the difference in head form specifications used between the two standards. Both DOT and ECE standards specify an impact velocity so that the impact energy varies with the headform size and weight. In contrast, SNELL M2005 testing was done on one head form mass throughout. One of the criticisms of this approach was that heads with a smaller circumference and correspondingly lighter mass, were sacrificed in favour of stiffer helmets optimised for a larger and heavier head form. A study published in Motorcyclist Magazine found that SNELL M2005 helmets were on average more stiff and transmitted more impact energy to the rider than DOT and DOT + ECE helmets. Again, these are laboratory results and there is no anthropometric data to support one standard over the next.

A separate study conducted by Dr. Randal Ching of the University of Washington, found a strong correlation between head mass and circumference. It suggests that the ECE 22.05 head form specification allows for a more precise fit across a broad range of different head sizes. Dr. Ching also sits on the SNELL board of directors and his study was certainly influential in the development of the SNELL M2010 standard. As a result, SNELL M2010 now adopts the head form specifications of ECE. This adoption called for redesigns to the shell form of small and very large sized helmets and also more impact absorbent lining in the extra small and small sized helmets. Changes for medium and large sizes are minimal from SNELL 2005. Overall, a move in the right direction for SNELL and positive news for riders.

In terms of marketability and profitability, ECE is a legally mandated standard in Europe meaning European riders who preferred SNELL helmets, couldn't use one on the street. Meanwhile in North America, an increasing number of DOT + ECE certified helmets were showing up on store shelves here. Over in Europe, SNELL wants to gain market share and this requires changes to make their helmets qualify for ECE certification testing. The adoption of ECE specifications within the new SNELL M2010 standard allows for the opportunity.

Vinyl wrap? Airbrushing? I haven't seen anyone mention skullskins.net!

I'm pretty sure it's like the stretch cloth material they make book covers out of.

I checked it out at cycle gear and its not really a dirt bike or even an endoro helmet, no place for goggles and there is a lot of space through the visor...

They said at the end of my MSF class that CHP has a rule about doing any type of advertising so they cant say who gives a discount but it rhymes with michael smear or something like that.

Anyone with a MSF card should be able to get a discount at CG, or at least at the Sac one. I do not know if it is CG corporate or just the local store that does it. Because I was riding before I took the class I got all my gear before I got my card so I really havent done anything with that yet, my gear is old. I do not know how to set it up or really anything more than I was told. My plan was to go in and talk to one of the cute girls at the cash register and ask "I heard that you get a discount with a MSF card, is that true?".

The cool thing is that you pay tax on the discounted price so even if the discount was equal to the tax rate it would still be cheaper.

I do know that some kid doing dirt stuff was sponsored by that CG store and got a pretty good discount on anything not already on sale (his mom was in front of me and I ended up hearing a lot of the details). I do not know what it takes to be sponsored but I am starting to get the feeling that they have so many discount programs that it shouldnt be hard to find one that applies to you.
Never heard of that. I just spent a ton of money there and it wasn't the first time. I should look into it.

Exactly why I wore mine to church every Sunday. I didn't even ride the bike and you'd better believe I turned a lot of heads! People couldn't keep their eyes off me through the whole sermon. I must've been irresistibly stylish!

I am stunned that a thread about helmets is focusing on style over substance.

Now this helmet is awesome (except for the $4000 price tag). I see this as including an exotic supercar in a thread about cool cars. You know, one that really performs.

And if the price tag on the last helmet disqualifies it from cool, how about Scorpion EXO-700 helmet? Snell rated for under $200 seems pretty dang cool to me.

I got my Snell Approved HJC CL-16 slayer for $130 and it even came with a clip-on anti-fog insert which is the greatest thing ever. Funny enough, I didn't buy it because I was looking for a value, I bought it because I was looking for a decent looking green helmet

Granted I still have the IRCs, gonna get some diablo ][s but they are not made for mud so that will still probably be a problem. meh.

With that, if the fit of the battlescar is nice I will get it tonight. I will rub your nose in the fact that I have one and you dont as often as I can I have already figured where the tigger ears are gonna go I just have to see where I will put my gopro. It *looks* like there is a spot on top that it will properly mount to, but I cant be sure until I have it in my hands er hand.

I have wanted a 2nd helmet and a different helmet for a while.
You might ORDER it tonight, but you will not receive it today. I was just there and they only have the normal variant...

I have to confess that color was a consideration for me, too. I was torn between a Shoei and an Arai, finding models that fit me very well in each. I wanted something light colored for visibility to cars, but preferably including Kawi Green. Arai was the winner.
