That's what it looked like, but it was a replica:

Quote:
In the 1980s, the car gained new notoriety on the first two seasons of NBC's hit television series Miami Vice. The black car used in the series was a replica built on a Corvette chassis. Ferrari execs were not pleased that their company and one of their products was represented on TV by an imitation car. The Daytona replica was eventually destroyed on-screen and replaced with a Ferrari Testarossa, the company's newest model during the time.

Haha - I am always taken back. Just put Glenn Frey's Smugglers Blues on my ipod. Flashback to Miami Vice.

When I first got a 250 ninja and was not used to the sweet spot at 6-13k rpm alot of cars could get past me easily. The handlebars were also bent and the cush was destroyed, after replacing the cush trying 3 different up gear combos and going back to stock because it seems to be the best for my weight I regularly fly through traffic. Although the occasional nissan or mustang can keep up or exeed I rarely get passed if I do not let them unless on a long straightaway at freeway speed. I know there are lots of cars that can out accelerate and even more with higher top speed. the problem is if a car goes into a slide he is less likely to die than me on my little ninja. I almost crashed on a backroad 3 weeks ago going too hot into a turn that had lots of sand the rear wheel just slid so I had to go on the opposite side shoulder. luckily I didnt have to bail, but lots of rednecks saw the whole thing and got a laugh. I also scared the cars coming the other way that I would have turned me into roadkill if I had not chosen the shoulder.

I do know sportbikes cost a fraction of the cost of fast cars but honestly a ex250's top speed is not much different than most of the crappy cars you see everyday in usa. spend 10k or more on performance parts for your civic and your lucky to keep up with the 250 purchased off craigslist for less than most pay a year on insurance. and your car will sound like its farting through a didgeridoo.

I also admit my lane choices help me get past most traffic too I cant split lanes legally where I live but i have done my share of weaving. Its dangerous but I fly past groups of 10 cars regularly and the only real challenge I have ever had was a taxicab with a crazy bastard in it. and he was really just trying to make it hard for me to switch lanes, I think he was stresed out because I have passed the dude a lot when he is stuck in traffic.

the strangest phenomenon is bmw drivers actually get into the left lane and let me pass, If i am driving a normal car they drive annoyingly. especially if they have the m badge. and I know a m series can woop my ninjette

Yes, I know the car they used was a replica. You think their budget could afford the real thing, especially for a new show? That's not the point though. As far as the show was concerned he was driving the real thing.

I'm incredulous that the Testarossa would currently be a 27-year old car. I feel dated!

SERIOUSLY!!!! This was my DREAM car in the late 80's through mid 90's. IIRC, it was ~ $1/4 million back then.

Just for S&G, I got an insurance quote on a 1988 Testerossa, garaged, limited weekend mileage only, with similar coverage as our existing vehicle.... to my surprise, it was financially within reasonable reach. To put "reasonable reach" in perspective, it came out little less then I hear a lot of teenagers cost when they get their own car (not talking sports or muscle car either).

The car itself, however, is not yet within "reasonable reach."

Ok...now think about this....does it matter to you that the guy in the mustang knows you beat him or for that matter...does it matter that anyone else knows you just blew their doors ( or side covers) off ? Sometimes i think if any modern bike were designed to let a rider reach their personl best...it would be the ninjette. I been riding 40+ years...never picked up a wrench till I hit this site and got this bike, never even attempted to hang off my 600. Like we used to say in the 60's....I'm into this bike.

I didn't buy this bike to outrun anyone . It is peppy enough to get plenty of enjoyment out of, but I can still enjoy it without ending up in jail or splattered all over the pavement (and still get 45mpg, and still pay $300 a year for almost full-coverage insurance, and still owe nothing on the bike because I only paid $2k for it.... etc etc).

But I am also pretty sure a well-running Ninjette with a few bolt-ons and good tuning could be competitive to ~60mph, especially with a gearing combo that would allow 60 to be reached in 2nd (if one were only going for 60mph contests).

All kidding aside, I think a stock 250 could give a Mercedes a real dusting, if the Mercedes was one of the "smart CARS" they sell in the US.

http://www.smartusa.com/smart-car-fortwo.aspx

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/200...fortwo-review/

So, the 250 is faster than some "cars"

Flashmonkey makes a good point...maybe without intending to. The guy on the gsx...most guys on gsx's...can easy lift the wheel by accident, easily slide the rear, slide the front...all without even trying. It's called accidents. For better or worse...the 250 is well mannered and extra safe.
Tell the truth....how many of us who also have or had bigger sport bikes have ever let them out on anything but a straightaway ? Tell the truuuuth>.

That is actually a very good point.

I was going to acknowledge that I may have overstated things a bit, but didn't have the energy.

Well that's one of the best thing about the 250. Going WOT and bouncing off the rev limiter in the first 3 gears on a side street and still being within legal distance of the speed limit is something that CANNOT be done on a larger motorcycle...SS or not I'd say. That bike is loads of fun on the street.

Farting around on a 750cc bike at 6k rpm all day is boring as hell. I've done 1st gear rips off of a red light numerous times and the acceleration is fantastic...and I love the shenanigans I can pull on some freeway on ramps...but the other 90% of the time I'm taking it easy for a lack of options.

I won't tell a lie. I beat the hell out of liter bikes on non- straightaways. Perhaps I need therapy.

Yes, this is where the grown-ups hang out

I can outrun a Bugatti Veyron at full throttle, well once he runs out of gas which is pretty quick at WOT in those cars.

What do you guys mean by sweet spot? Where the bike does the best performance?

My 250r seems to struggle in each gear when I hit around 6k rpm. Maybe I just think it's struggling coz it's making a louder noise?

Then again... I'm still in my breaking in period. Is that why?

That bike is loads of fun on the street.

Farting around on a 750cc bike at 6k rpm all day is boring as hell. I've done 1st gear rips off of a red light numerous times and the acceleration is fantastic...and I love the shenanigans I can pull on some freeway on ramps...but the other 90% of the time I'm taking it easy for a lack of options.
Pretty true. I have rode through a turn on just a rear wheel due to a little hard throttle to early in the turn. Not a very fun feeling. Over all I had no trouble on my 250 keeping up with my friends through the turns. I did have to run my bike a little harder than they did, but as soon as the road straightend out I'd be on it to keep up. At a point I thought "this is prob. more dangerous than them riding at cruising speed because I'm rushing myself to keep up."

I'm sure running it all out on the 250 seems great but when your running full out, you have more of a chance of making a mistake imo.

The only time I'd say I "gun" it is on the entry ramp to the highway or on the highway. There's an occasional romp on the throttle on the backroad but nothing worth writting home too.

I have to say while the 250 isn't the fastest of bikes, I can't even begin to tell you the number of people who would roll down their window and yell "Nice Bike!" at me at a stop light. Then .. the question comes.. which is always 1 of 2 questions and sometimes both. "How big of bike is it" or "How fast have you had it to." Sometimes I'd just smile and yell "It's a 600 and I've had it up to 190mph" .. just to see the on peoples faces.
