My dad and I have Progressive here in Ohio and my dad was paying $75/yr without me on his plan. When he added me, (I was 18 at the time), it went up to $95/yr for both of us (now 2 bikes, 81 Honda 250 and I have the 07 ninja 250).
This last year, it dropped to $75/yr for each of us. We only have liability, but I read some were paying a lot more for just liab also. |

I don't have a ninja so I won't vote, but I'll share my insurance just to give people an idea. I'm 28, married, and have my home, two cars and two bikes through farm bureau. I have a 2003 SV650S with full coverage ($500 deductibles for both comp and collision) and am paying $214 a year. I also have a 1981 TS125 with liability only that I am paying $108 a year on.

Vancouver BC Canada
ICBC is the bane of every person that lives here. Especially motorcycle riders. Admittedly I have not been riding very long, but I have no at fault accidents with one speeding ticket in 5 years. My insurance was set to be at around 1500+ for one full year. Now, I have switched to part private part icbc (because we have no choice), and I am down to around 730$. |

Insurance Comparisons are futile
Over at gtamotorcycle.com there is an entire section of the forum dedicated to insurance. Luckily there are 3 insurance gurus that answer everyone's questions dealing with ONTARIO insurance. Insurance law and rates differ from province to province in Canada alone. Comparing insurance between a Canadian and American is completely pointless.
The minimum coverage by law in Ontario is $200,000 liability. Practically nobody gets less than 1million in coverage. It would be totally irresponsible to get less coverage if you understand that a bike accident could leave you disabled and dependent on professional caregivers for the rest of your life. I fully expect to pay $1200 this year (my first riding season). I'll also be taking 2mill liability coverage because the small increase in cost between 1 and 2 mill is well worth it in my opinion. For everyone that says they pay 99/yr or 200/yr how much liability coverage do you have?

Insurance
Ok so I know that the 250s get great rates on insurance but I'm trying to find the best of the best. I just bought the bike for a little over $2000 so I'm only bothering with liability. So far Progressive is the cheapest but I'm just wondering what you guys think.
I'm 20, male, no tickets or crashes, and I have taken a motorcycle safety course. The bike is a 2004. Suggestions? |

Im paying $40 a year right now with liability only. Ive got a good grade discount, and i think its under my moms name...I'm 16 and i havent taken the MSF course and ive got an 08.
I cant remember right off the top of the head what the insurance company is, but i know the one i had before, American Family Insurance, gave me some pretty good rates for liability. When i get home ill find out who i have and let you know, because $40 a year isnt bad. |

Nah, thats about right. I know with Geico? I got quoted like some $1000...So theres a CRAZY difference between companies. Just do some searching around, it's worth the time.

I don't really know how everyone gets such low rates. I hope you have high uninsured motorist/UM coverages. I'm 25 and in philadelphia I was quoted 535 a year by Dairyland with comprehensive.
Progressive was like $360 a year with lower un/um coverages and no comprehensive. Geico forget it. I've had no points, one accident that should fall off in July. Happened 3 years ago. The location must be key. I used a 2009 ninja 250 in my quote. Most likely I will go with dairyland. |

Yeah Progressive is quoting me $75 right now for just uninsured motorist and injury and property damage. To put a $500 deductible on comprehensive and collision it would cost $143. Still not a lot but I really don't think it's necessary.

Oh yeh progressive basic package was 80 bucks a year for me too. But You deff need UM/UN at higher levels and a higher bodily injury limit. I don't care about collision but I was more worried as I live in an apartment complex with no garage the bike would get stolen. I haven't bought it yet so I'm still looking for other companies.

Must be based on location then because for me it can go all the way up to 300k++
I believe I chose 50/100 for each. 15/30 is basic where I am. |

It seems that way. I like how if you change one little thing in these packages the price becomes more than even the premium package. Do they seriously charge you just for making it custom? That's so dumb

As odd as it may seem, each company does this. You can't even customize it so much without it skyrocketing. They give a better price for a package they have set for you. But you would think by removing one thing to compensate another it would get it to a decent price but it doesn't. I hate insurance, I pay a **** ton for my car too full coverage. Even if its not my fault the premium I bet will go up.
My car was t boned by a lady not paying attention at a stop sign. I was found not at fault by my company. The other company is refusing to pay or take claim. These 2 million dollar companies are fighting over my 500 dollar deductible! |

basically whatever you need.
i spoke to a geico agent (i have them for my car) and they said yeah our bike rates are not really competitive, but we're working it, check back in the future when we review them. i have progressive too, collision and liability. I pay about 260 a year for it, with 250/500 deductibles, respectively. It's basically worthless for claims though. They will just total your bike most likely, so it's either fix your bike yourself or scrap it and buy a new one. I got some cosmetic damage and they were ready to haul it away on a salvage truck without even looking at it first. I guess it's a scare tactic to keep you from claiming lol. edit: they don't really charge you extra for customizing. at least i didn't get charged. they will even show you how much above "standard" each option costs or how much below too. every single coverage tid bit is broken down. |

If you get the highest deductible...after 4 periods without claims, your deductible will be 0. Progressive's disappearing deductible ftw.

I was shopping around for insurance a few weeks back and progressive was the cheapest by far. I got comprehensive for ~250. Nationwide wanted over 700 and All state wanted 1200... Don't know how some companies figure out their numbers.

I have AllState for my car and I figured I would get a discount and they said I would. Sure did not seem like it. $48 a month for liability with just standard coverages and no comprehensive. I'm starting to think the 25 years old theory does not reduce your rate even though they say so, because my policy renewed and it did not decrease as they promised.

Your age also matters too. In the twenties and it will be higher. Even if you have an accident not your fault.

What are you limits? I have looked at every company there is, they are all expensive for just liability and comprehensive. I will not be getting full coverage for sure.
I'd rather pay 500 a year than 800 with all state or progressive. |

Insurance experience
Well I am picking up my bike next weekend so I started getting some quotes. These are based on a decent driving record, no points although I have gotten a ticket in March 2012 for unsafe speed that was dismissed due to a plea bargain this week. All other tickets about 2 others happened 3 years ago and also I got no points for them either.
Have any of you had any experience with the following three companies? Here are my options: Progressive: Policy coverages - $577 a year Bodily Injury & Property Damage: $50,000 person/$100,000 accident/$25,000 property damage Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury: $50,000 person/$100,000 accident (Unstacked) Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury: $50,000 person/$100,000 accident (Unstacked) Pedestrian First Party Benefits: $5,000 ($0 deductible) Medical Payments: No coverage Transport Trailer: No coverage Vehicle coverages for 2009 KAWASAKI EX250 Physical Damage Options: Actual Cash Value Comprehensive: $500 deductible Collision: No coverage Roadside Assistance: Selected with Trip Interruption Accessory coverage: $3,000 (Included) Rider: Your 12 month PA quote is:$ 855.00 Your premium qualifies for the following 1-Pay : 100% Down Pay Pay in Full:$ 855.00 4-Pay : 25% Down Pay, 3 Installments of 25% Downpayment:$ 213.75 3 installments of:$ 220.75 Insured Information First Named Insured Date of Birth 02/18/1987 Marital Status Single State Pennsylvania Zip 19114 City PHILADELPHIA County PHILADELPHIA Motor Vehicle Record Do you have a Valid Motorcycle License?
