Augmented Reality Helmets?
So I came across this Skully augmented reality helmet today. The big feature is a built in rear camera and gps directions on the heads up display.
https://www.skully.com/ I think this is too much information begin crammed in your face while riding. The feed from the rear camera distracts attention from what is in front of you. The mind can't focus on both at once. I guess it would be nice to check for cops I just think a hud should be simple bits of info that can be quickly checked, not a live camera feed. That's just information overload. What's the ninjette consensus on this?

Topic that has been discussed before, I'm not sure if skully ever did deliver their product.

I think it's shipping now or will be soon. They have it for sale for $1500.

They are supposed to be shipping soon, yeah and they've been saying that for about a year and a half. I have a co-worker that put the full $1,500 down almost 2 years ago and still no helmet.

No thanks. Anything that will take your attention away from the road or traffic is a no-go for me.

I think your answer will be age-related.
I'm old enough to really appreciate simplicity. I don't need all that crap. Or an intercom. Or the ability to talk on my friggin' telephone while riding. Or the constant hand-holding of a GPS (though I will use one when warranted). So... nifty idea. Not interested, thanks.

I don't think I'd like a constant camera feed. I could see a potential use for a GPS but I don't think I need it in my face.
No need for connection to my phone. I don't even want to have music playing, though I like my intercom. Count me in the group that wants simplicity! |

I imagine the commuter guys would be interested, but I am not at all. I am interested in @Ghost opinion.

I wouldn't spend $1500 on one, but conceptually I like HUDs. Perhaps it has something to do with spending my youth playing flight sims and racing games, all of which have a HUD or equivalent in the first person view (the only way to play, obviously). Every vehicle I've driven and plane I've flown since then has, tragically, been sans HUD.....but the concept still seems normal and easy to me.
With regard to it being a distraction, I'm of the opinion that there is a large supply of unimportant information already hitting your retinas while riding, and everyone here (hopefully) is adept at tuning out the parts that don't matter. I don't see it being any worse to have a display available by eye movement (HUD) rather than head movement (gauge cluster). The specific implementation on Skully's site isn't very well designed, but the HUD concept is sound. Motorcycles aren't any harder to ride than aircraft are to fly, and pilots seem to get by just fine despite the availability of information.

I dropped $1,399 Aug'14 with a "goal" for delivery in May'15.
May'15 they delayed it to Dec'15. Nov'15 they delayed it to Mar'16, but I was offered to applying for beta testing, I did not take it. They told me a couple of weeks ago I can expect to get mine in June. getting closer I like knowing what is behind me. I love my reevu helmet but it does take a second to refocus on the reflection in the helmet. It is my understanding that is not an issue for skully. Add photochromic shield and noise cancellation. Everything else it has...whatever. They did send me a nice t-shirt and hat for Christmas and I am in a drawing for a Decoti.

From a UX perspective it seems odd to have the directions on top of the image of the rear facing camera.
But it looks cool. The price point is high though. |

With modern day advancements of 3D Hud & silicone moulding; I'm expecting a soon to be released Woody Allen Orgasmatron helmet!
....oh sorry....you're talking about motorcycle helmets. Mirrors and a bobble head give me all the data I need from behind. On the bike: the sound of the wind and the music of my engine (through ear plugs). I admit to the occasional use of a Sena for road trips with a small group or fellow rider. Certainly NOT my phone! I'm trying to get away!

Sure, people do talk on their phones. Just not something I want to do. Not on my bike, anyway.
