godzilla reborn

most of the regulars know i picked up member jmgrande 2010 250r SE. now i’m figuring what direction to go. of course it will get a el cheapo slip on, radiator guard, swingarm spools. the bike has been sitting for years. garaged with fuel treatment/stabilizer and battery tender.(battery dead anyways) i have new shinko’s coming but i wonder if the stock tires are still good. no evidence of dry rot, cracking. what do y’all think?

Awesome deal! Might need some cumulative maintenance, but still incredibly clean bike!

I say test the tyres. Use pressure recommended in manual and on swingarm +2-3psi for your weight. Bring them up to speed gradually and see how they feel. Starting with high-silica rubber compounds in the ‘90s, tyres simply do not degrade like they used to. Even race tyres aren’t affected by heat-cycling like they used to. The 9-yr old factory BT-45 tyres on my street bike works as well as when they were brand-new. Their lap-times are right in-line with new versions. I can drag pegs and kickstand all day long on them.

I like how this guy tests unknown tyres: http://vfrworld.com/threads/shinko-t...-review.15098/

I don’t think I’m going to yank the airbox out on this one. Those carburetors are just too fussy with no air box. I will definitely shim the needles and play with the pilots though. stick coils for sure.

You have link to hi-res version of that picture? I’m gonna print out and make decal for my bike!!!

Yeah, stock newgen carburetors have lean spot in middle and too-rich up top. A couple of washers dials them in perfectly!

Not ideally (usually), but just shims is a marked improvement for many. I put on a full Area-P exhaust, and ended up going DOWN a size in the main jet for the optimal tune. Don't know how the shims relate to original since they're different needles.

Yeah, I went from stock 98 mains down to 96. And that's with 20% more high-end flow too.

I always go off tyre manufacture dates and replace if more than, ummm, 5 years (IIRC) from manufacturer.

I suppose how they were stored and how/if they were cleaned comes into play.

Excellent! How about a tattoo? If you can get away with 8.5x11" or smaller you could make your own decal on an HP computer printer - it's easy.

following this post with great interest.. ha
we have the same bike! SE and all
gotta do some stuff on my carb too.. haven't touched it at all but was told by a mechanic to upgrade pilot to 40? instead of stock 38? and something about drilling something etc etc... I'm not very techy..

I did new front steel braided brake line, new tires, new brakes, r6 throttle tube, and swingarm spool.

38 pilots are fine. they just need to turned out some. on drilling carburetor slide: yes i did this on exploited ninja for kicks. it does work. try shimming needles with 2 washers. the se will like it. try doing some of the work yourself. all the info and every mod, tech data is right here.

thanks for the info!
yeah I been taking the bike to local DIY shop and wrenching it myself including tire change but nice weather is finally here.. I just want to go ride instead of wrenching.
Also was thinking I'd get to carb and all once I decide to upgrade to full exhaust system.

Well... the flow-path inside isn't quite as clean as Akro. But unless you're career racer with a paycheque that depends upon getting trophies, Ali clone can't be beat! I got TWO for $58!! Here's thread on how I installed them on my street and race bikes.
