Transmission problems?

Hey all, I somewhat recently bought a 92' Ninja 250, I haven't been able to ride it yet due to bad weather, though when I bought it, it was driven to where I looked at it, from which it was hauled back home. I noticed that, while turned off and sitting in my basement, the bike goes into 1st gear but doesn't go to 2nd. I haven't really had a chance to start it to troubleshoot due to a pretty dead battery and carbs needing to be cleaned. Is this something that I need to be worried about or am I just being a paranoid beginner?

Thanks man! Definitely puts mind to ease. Also that's pretty cool, I've never heard about a system like that.
