My tire question.... (Yes, again)

So, I just hit 6600 miles, and I'm looking into replacing the tires. I still have plenty of tread on them (they haven't worn down into the wear bars).

In my case, I want tires that last long and don't kill my gas mileage. (I figured anything other than the stock IRCs would give me better handling anyway.) This, of course, eliminates the Sport Demons from consideration.

I ride in just about every situation and place other than the track. (In fact, for work, I have to occasionally go down gravel roads.)

I was really hoping for another tire thread.

What information do you think is out there that hasn't been discussed to death already? No tire is going to affect your gas mileage in any significant way. But they do wear at different rates. If you don't want the Sport Demons, that leaves the BT-45's, and GT-501's as top all-around choices. If you want to experiment with larger tires, consider the BT-016's. If you're taking it on track, some people prefer the BT-003RS's.

Carry on.

Yeah, all the information I got from the searches tend to not go very much into the gas mileage aspect (and they talk about how your Sport Demons only lasted 3000 miles or so), and I want every last drop of gas to count.

I thought we can't get GT-501s here in the US that is of the right size? Or has that changed the last time I checked?

It has changed, they've released the GT-501's to the open market in the correct sizes. FWIW, some people are getting 7K miles or more out of the sport demons, and I ended up roasting the 501's in < 4K miles as well, so don't take my own wear as a great prediction of the median wear across all bikes/riders.

There really isn't a gas mileage aspect to motorcycle tires, especially on our bike. The minor differences in rolling resistance, even with reasonable grip differences, doesn't have nearly as much an effect compared to how the bike is being ridden on mileage. We can move the mileage from the 30's to the 60's depending on our throttle hand no matter what tire is mounted. For any particular tire, to make sure it's getting the best mpg, make sure to keep the tire pressures reasonable, and there's nothing else to worry about.

Decent tire mileage thread: ---> Clicky

Incidentally, I've decided to get the BT45s. I just dropped by the local Cycle Gear to place a special order for them.

Holy , how tight are the bolts on this thing? I had to jam my 17mm wrench on various parts of the body to keep it from not moving while undoing the nuts on the axles!

(Incidentally, having a breaker bar is a requirement for getting that rear axle off.)

So, I got the wheels with the BT45 tires back on the bike. It's a to do it with one person, but it can be done.

I've put in about 20-25 miles (I had to make a run to the office) and the thing that probably stands out the most with the BT45 compared to the IRC tires is that they drop into a turn quite a bit faster. I'll have to get used to that.

New tires often feel that way compared to the used ones taken off, even if they were the exact same type. The new tires have a perfectly round profile front and back that makes it so easy to roll into a turn compared to tires that have been worn down in the center, presenting a much flatter profile to the road, especially in back. Enjoy the new buns!

I'm certainly enjoying them! The thing is that they still fall faster than the IRCs even when the IRCs were new.

Link? The stock 250 sizes aren't on Dunlop's site.
