throttle cable adjustment

My throttle has too much play, but I can't seem to adjust it at the lever end. I can't really make sense of the adjuster there. It's really hard to turn, and doesn't seem to have any effect. I could just adjust it down at the other end, but I was wondering if there is some trick to using the adjuster at the lever?

If the EX250 is the same as the ZZR250, then there is an outer locking wheel, which you loosen, then turn the inner adjuster counter clockwise to take up slack innthe pull cable. When you have it as required, then use the outer wheel to lock it in place.

The carb end has a rough adjuster, if you go there, make sure the throttle end is full in, then adjust at the carb end & finish the fine adjustment at the twist grip.

Thanks...I just had another look and I still can't get anywhere with it. I can just turn it around half a turn, then it gets stuck. I can turn it beyond that with a pliers (although it chews up the wheel) and then after another half turn or so it gets loose again. But anyway no amount of turning seems to make any difference to the slack.

EDIT: got it. The adjusting nut was just very hard to turn, and also springy - every time I let go it wants to rotate back again. I eventually got it with the pliers, though it looks bit rough now lol.

It will be better if you avoid using pliers for adjustments and maintenance work.
All the nuts and bolts of your bike are metric.

A set of metric wrenches is not expensive and can be used on the same nut over and over again without causing any damage.

So your saying channel locks isn't the right tool to adjust clutch slack? Actually I always knew this, just never cared. However, I seem to do less damage with pliers than a wrench in that one place (and that's the only place I misuse pliers).

The throttle cable adjuster is round.

I believe that is what racingninja is talking about. You can actually turn them with a wrench. My argument is that its not any easier.

Its not like a standard nut its a circle with like 50 edges you can use a wrench or a pair of pliers. Or maybe not and I'm thinking if a different type of nut. Either way, its late and I'm not thinking straight.

You're right. I went outside and tried and sure enough I can get it to turn with a 12mm wrench, although as you said it doesn't really grip any better than a pliers.

The reason RacinNinja is confused is because he didn't post on this thread, it was Motofool

If you are talking about the throttle cables, please, read these:

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Adjusti...hrottle_cables

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Throttl...is/re-assembly

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Lubing_the_cables

Keep all the cables clean and lubed.

Often, when the regulator of any cable is not sufficient to eliminate the slack, the cable is in its way out, with some broken strands of wire and it has elongated beyond adjustment.

Yes, for the round counter-nut of the clutch cable, you can use pliers, but you can protect its surface using a piece of leather or sandpaper between the jaws and the nut.

No need for apologies.

Here is additional info about Bowden cables, just in case @divil is interested:
