Anyway, what's with the guy in the BARF thread who keeps saying that the bearings are shot because it bounced off the rev limiter when it was still on its side? Is this true? He says he's intimately familiar with this bike.

Motors don't do so well when running on their side. Yes, it's possible to spin a bearing if it has insufficient oil coverage. Whether significant damage happens in 3 seconds, 10 seconds, 60 seconds, or 5 minutes is hard to say definitively, and would depend on a number of factors.

I gotta disagree. There is no reason he should have crashed. That upcoming left hander was weak sauce, turn the head to the left and lean just a tiny bit more and voila! saved it!

I will say that I find it amusing when people crash with no gear on and still don't gear up later, but they have an expensive aftermarket exhaust. "I couldn't afford a jacket and pants." I am MOTGATT, but I still respect other people's right to make what I consider to be stupid decisions.

Yeah, I saw the yellow line thing as well jeff and that was what bothred me the most. It slipped my mind though as I was posting lol. And when he crashed he was on gravel.. (never been on a bike yet so here's my noob question) was it really not sufficient enough to cause a crash?

He had already looked forward at that point and likely had no idea how to counter-steer to deliberately move away because he didn't take an MSF course. When you deliberately move the bars without understanding counter-steering, you will turn them like a bicycle, which is the exact opposite of how you should turn them at speeds over 10MPH. It happens unconsciously under normal conditions so most people never even notice that they are pushing the left bar forward to go left and vice versa. When deliberately manipulating the bars in an emergency situation without this knowledge, it usually causes a panic-freeze the moment you realize it's not working and you go straight at the obstacle you are looking at. If you are looking where you want to go, the unconscious know-how takes over. If you are looking at what you want to avoid in a potential emergency situation, the manual "think you know how" takes over. This is likely the essence of the bike "going where you look" and the whole "target fixation" phenomenon. Yes, you can overcome that effect, but not without knowing what you are doing and how steering works.

+1

if he knew how to steer properly he could have easily "recovered" from the point where he saw he was about to go off the edge. even if he did target fix, knowing how to steer would have kept him on the road.

And most likely grabbed a handful of front brake too.
