Shock replacement - VTR1000?

Hey all,

I’m looking to replace my rear shock as I’ll be doing a lot of 2-up and it bottoms out on these roads.
I’ve scoured the forums and wiki and saw that GSXR600 or Ninja 500 shocks are the usual replacements. The lowest I can get one around here is about 140 dollars shipped though - slightly on the high side for me.
I have access to a VTR10000 SHOWA shock for cheap - will it fit, without too much hassle, and will it raise the rear too much?
I’ve looked around but it seems every website gives me different information - total height, mounting sizes etc. Does anyone have experience with a VTR? Do you think it’d fit? Apparently the average height is 37cm...it’s fully adjustable.

Thanks in advance! :-)

i took a google and it looks like it might work out. you need to find out the inside width of the bottom fork on the shock and the size of the eyelet as well as the outside diameter of the case around the eyelet. don't forget about spring rates on the new compression ratio that the ninja triangle knuckle provides. i believe its 0.65

it sounds like its about 2 inches longer than the stock shock so you will need longer dogbones to accomodate it. be careful because this will rotate the shock knuckle down further and it might create clearance problems. worst case you'll have to use a different triangle knuckle. i have an r1 shock with r1 knuckle on one of my 250s and a gsxr shock with stock knuckle on the other.

Thanks Alex, looks like the VTR would just barely fit...the spring rate is way too high though. My brother found a very cheap GSXR shock for $9...he'll be bringing it over during his Xmas break
