Checked in to the rally start hotel, just north of Pittsburgh. Already about a dozen bikes here, and looking at the map it appears there will be quite a few more by the end of the night. Need to figure out whether to send my clothes to the laundry (lazy) or wash 'em in the sink. One set has been in my side cases for 2 days, and evidently they weren't completely dry when I put them in, as they have taken on a bit of, well, an essence of sorts.

Realizing that all bikes here have covers. I've never used or owned a bike cover, and didn't really think of it for this event either. Nothing on the bike can't get wet, other than the radar detector which I stash away in the rain. That said, I have no idea where I'd even fit a small cover on the bike, as every nook and cranny is already packed full. Not easy planning to be away for almost 4 weeks on a motorcycle!

The entire east coast is rain (as stated by the weather channel which is 50/50 at best).

It will put a delay on my plans. I don't feel like taking the chance to ride a week in the rain.

There's a good thread on the FJR forum right here on this year's event.

Yeah the weather here is off and on rain all weekend. those rain covers are pretty handy and come with their own bag. If you feel the need to pick one up wal mar usually sells them for under $50, they roll up and stash in a very small bag. I have one I used to use when I rode to work in iffy weather, just left it in my desk.

Easy day today. More riders trickling in. Only real event today is if you signed up for the organizers to have their way with your head. In other words, they can shave or cut your hair to their liking. During the banquet, those who let themselves be violated get to stand up, and an applause-o-meter decides who wins the best haircut. My vote is a reverse mohawk for the win, but I wasn't game enough to enter. The prize for winning is being let out of the parking lot first on Monday morning. I believe we are let go at a certain interval of seconds, so with 100 or so riders, if it's 30 seconds each, it might take awhile to get to the last riders, so the prize can be significant. But I already had my head buzzed with a #2, and I'm happy with how it is.

Will be meeting up with a friend later today to play with some routing software. One of these long distance folks came up with a complicated excel spreadsheet awhile back that aids in the process. It takes in the waypoints and point values, and helps you recode them to names with point values included in the name, and it also helps you quickly sort them by a number of criteria. Then you output it to streets and trips to optimize some suggested routes, before either then pushing it straight to a gps, or through mapsource then to a gps. I want to have the process down before we're on the clock.

I picked up a few odds and ends today, including a 3-hole punch, a few small plastic folders that will hold 3-hole punch paper, some more pens, and some extra screws for my BMR shelf holding the fuel cell. After using a vise-grip on the thumbscrews, I was able to tighten them such that there was no way they were coming off, but now even if they do, I have some spares on the bike in case. My extra fuel cap and gaskets did arrive at the hotel yesterday, so hopefully I won't be let down by a fuel cap problem during the rally.

It sure does look like we're going to get for at least the first leg. And the heat in the southwest looks ominous as well!

When I plan to be in the rain, I carry a light weight cover that's been water repellant treated and a large trash bag (absolutely waterproof). The way I pack it and have it ready for just in case, it makes a nice pillow. It fits into the back of my high viz vest. Sometimes I even put the rain gear or liners back there.

Good Luck, stay dry and happy riding!

We're not allowed to share our individual locations publicly. They will almost certainly randomize the letters/numbers on the riders on that public page several times during the rally.

Made it successfully through registration, tech inspection, and the odo check this morning. Now I have to actually ride this silly event. There's a mandatory meeting for rookies in a half hour.

There's an IBR rider here on a pre-gen ninjette. Green! He's from San Diego, name is Kurt I believe. Haven't had a chance to talk with him yet, and only got that info while we were both waiting at a traffic light. Will try to catch up with him tomorrow to hear more about what he has done with his bike for the rally.

I don't get it. A bunch of pics of motorcycles. I thought it was the "Iron Butt" rally. I only saw 3 pics of butts. Get it straight, bikes or butts!

P.S. I'd rather see the bikes.

It's pouring at the moment. Group pic is in an hour, then the mandatory rider's meeting at 4. Here's a fun time-lapse of the spot tracks from the 2011 event:

That was wild.

I hope you enjoy the rain. It will feel like heaven compared to the brutal heat in the southwest.

Do you get to stop at any massage parlors to work out any cramps?

If no one told you, Rossi won yesterday and Rosberg and Sykes won today.

I watched the GP yesterday, but skipped F1 and WSBK. No time for massage parlors, but I appreciate the thought.

We just took the group picture. 90 some-odd solo riders, plus 6 2-up couples. The mandatory riders meeting is in 40 minutes, and from that point forward, it's pretty much game on for 11 days. We go right to the banquet afterwards, and expect to receive the first leg packets by 6:30 or so. It should provide enough time to plan a reasonable route, yet still get some sleep before needing to be out at our bikes by 8 AM tomorrow morning.

I will not have any time from this point on to update this thread with any info during the rally, so don't take my going quiet as anything other than I'm busy. I hope and expect that this place will be just fine, but if for some unexpected reason it does crap out before July 11th, I'll be back on the case after the rally to fix what needs to be fixed.

Wish me luck!

We received the leg 1 packets tonight, and the event is underway. There is an embargo on posting/blogging/tweeting/whatever by any riders that goes into effect tomorrow morning at 8, and remains through the end of the event. So this is going to be it for me, and my next posts will be after the conclusion of the whole enchilada. The 1st leg had some interesting choices, everywhere from the furthest northeast areas of Canada, to west of Detroit, and as far south as Key West, FL. The reason I'm still posting now is that I'm amped up from several hours of planning and routing, and I think I have a decent one mapped out. Hoping for limited weather problems in the directions I'm heading, and my plan is designed so I shouldn't be too much under the gun to get back here by Thursday evening. But time will tell. The daily reports from Bob Higdon have started here, so even though riders can't post, people can still follow along pretty well:

Ok, so now it's time to spam the forum with porn. And gay jokes about Alex.

Like, Alex is so gay that when he gets back from vacation his ass will be so sore he won't be sitting down for a week.

Or something like that.

I hope you and all your stuff can stay relatively dry when you come east Alex! It's pouring here today and tomorrow! Have fun and stay safe!

Alex Ciurczak continues to sail along, though how we know not. First he mislaid
his camera, but another rider found it and returned it before Alex even knew it
was gone. Then, after taking a bonus photo, he forgot to stow his rally flag
securely. It flapped in the wind, hanging from the bike by a thread or two, for 50
miles before Ciurczak luckily reeled it back in. Later a brake failure warning light
stopped him on the side of the road. He called Roger Sinclair, an electrical
engineer who finished 4th overall on the IBR two years ago. Roger walked Alex
through a quick fix and got him refloated. Stories that begin like this often don’t
end well, but I won’t say they never do
Anyone know if this is our Alex?

Facebook makes for some easy stalker activity. Though I do wonder on the origin of this little report?
