Just a little bit of warning....

If you have a motorcycle, and a garage, and you boast about doing your own maintenance on your bike....

....and a colleague has a motorcycle, and no garage....

....have fun helping him do maintenance on his bike in your garage.

(Not that I'm not willing, it's a lot of fun working on a different bike!)

I find its more fun working on someone else's thing whether its bike, computer, yard. Don't know why but when its mine its like a problem I have to solve so I can move on and enjoy myself. When its someone else's thing there is less feeling to get it done quickly and move on. No idea why.

Yeah, long story short.... his bike was up for a scheduled maintenance which involves a valve clearance check. Dealer quoted him $600 in fealty (whoops, make that "charges"). He was like, "@#$% the dealer" and we've spent about 4 hours getting the bike torn down and started to do the adjustment.

We're finishing this up Wednesday, hopefully. We ended up stopping because it got to the point where I couldn't remember where my tools are, especially when I'm holding them in my hands.

Do it all the time. You are right, lots of fun, and a good learning experience. I do it with bicycles as well.

just part of the bonding process I've offered mine up to any members in our area - it's a great way to get to know the folks who have your back on the road

Okay, we FINALLY got his bike up and running. Let's say dropping nuts into cylinder heads don't make for fast repair, eh?

(Incidentally, this bike wasn't a Ninjette. Oh well.)

Magnet on a string. The nuts are usually magnetic so it could save you a bunch of time. If it isn't magnetic (stainless, something else) then you get to have fun trying to fish it out.

Or a mechanics magnet probe. Jr decided to help daddy while he was cleaning and lubing the chain. He chucked both the chain guard bolts into the exhaust pipe. To say I was lit at that point would be an understatement.

That's what it took. Even then, it took him about a couple of hours to get the nut out using a magnetic tool.
