Havana has old cars, Williamsburg has old bikes.

Williamsburg, Brooklyn NYC is USA HQ for hipsters. Reasonable to say they are overwhelmingly educated, prosperous ( rents for a studio begin @ $1500) 30 something white guys and the vehicle of choice has 2 wheels....hundreds of bikes there in the lil' 2-3 square mile area. If i saw 100 other riders today, I only saw 1 riding a bike that was made after 2000. Hondas and yamahas from late 70's by the score, guzzi's, triumphs and very few Kawi's that I saw. Dozens of beat up old Vespas and lambrettas...some Ducati's but scuffed, dirty Monsters mainly.
It's not like they cant afford new bikes...new (er). Drove by a few shops....they did repairs only...and some were booked weeks in advance.....weeks! I spoke to a mechanic rolling out ...think it was a CB360 T...and he told me that in addition to the "real" repair shops, there were dozens of guys making a living doing repairs on the street. Further...motorcycle regs in Brooklyn have tripled in the past 10 years (Brooklyn has about 3,000,000 people). Living near people-dense NYC, I've never seen such a concentration of bikes and the fact that they all seem to be "survivor" antiques....I dont know what to make of it. I saw no restroations and no dual sports there, not 1.

ummm...to each their own...they are looking for the retro look..

i would rather ride a modern japanese or european bike with all the reliability, better performance, handling, and braking even though not as much character...yep, ride than wrench..

All the bikes are probably from Ghost Motorcycles. I remember going there as a kid. They had a small shop but also a huge warehouse with thousands of bikes.

Ghost was motorcycle Mecca back then. Ducs, Guzzis and all the high-end stuff a poor kid from Pittsburgh could only dream of.

I say good for the guys riding vintage stuff, it's keeping food on the table for a lot of parts suppliers and wrenches in the area.

Ghost and sal gotta be gone, 30 -35 years. As to pics of the whole thing... really...nothing worth seeing...picture a 1978 Honda, original condition, complete with metallic brown tank and a small tear in the seat.
What surprised me so much is the idea that this community has the money and the brains to get whatever they want and, well...guess they got what they want ?

They try to be different, but they all end up looking all alike... One started the trend back then, then one thought it was cool, then another one, then another one...

Apply same thinking process with black rimmed glasses, tattoos, beards, name it...

It's the guy with no tattoos, no beard, no glasses, to tight jeans, listening to commercial radios that is the "real rebel" these days...

Same with bicycles. These hipsters look poor, but they have money! Instead of buying a $2,000 modern road (or fixed gear bike) from Trek/Giant/Specialized/Cervelo/Fuji/Bianchi, etc., they spend $2k on a new bike with vintage looking steel frames (lugged frame made from 853 or higher grade steel). From an untrained eye, you'd think the bike is garbage. But look closer, it's a work of beauty in disguise.

Are all bikes ate up with rust?
Any BMW?
How much is gas there?
What is a studio? What are taxes on a studio?
What does it cost to register a bike? Continuing taxes?
How much does a cup of coffee cost?
How many times do the poelice pull you over on every ride to enquire about what you are doing?

Those are two very different lives.
Persons that have not arrived to the second phase cannot understand (or properly estimate the first one).

This seems like a very judgemental thread.

I went out riding to a restaurant I've never been to before. This sort of nerdy-looking bookworm walked up to me. He looked like your stereotypical yuppie accountant, complete with a sweater tied around his neck. He struck up a conversation, complemented me on my 250 - and then recommended a couple of nearby roads he enjoys riding on his Ducati Monster.

You can't judge a book by its cover.

It's fun in a while having that kind of thread... Especially when you have nothing else to do on a Saturday night... héhéhéhéhéhéhéhéhéhé...

Maybe I'm a hipster, but I'd love one of those late 70s Japanese bikes. Hard to find that look in bikes these days.

What exactly is a hipster, anyhow? I keep hearing this term thrown around, so I Googled it:
Quote:
Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. The greatest concentrations of hipsters can be found living in the Williamsburg, Wicker Park, and Mission District neighborhoods of major cosmopolitan centers such as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco respectively. Although "hipsterism" is really a state of mind,it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. Both hipster men and women sport similar androgynous hair styles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs.
That's from the urban dictionary.
