Two IoM TT Racers Killed Over Weekend

Two Isle of Man TT racers died in two crashes over the weekend. Sidecar pilot Dwight Beare and rider Paul Shoesmith were killed in separate incidents Saturday.

Saturday was the opening day of the annual road-racing event, which is infamous for its fatality rate.

Beare, 27, was involved in a crash near the Rhencullen section of the Mountain Course at about 2 p.m. local time. His passenger, Benjamin Binns, was airlifted to a nearby hospital but miraculously appears to have only suffered a fractured ankle. His condition was listed as stable.

Originally from Melbourne, in Australia, Beare had more recently called the Isle of Man home. He had made his debut at the Isle of Man TT in 2014, finishing 12th in the second race of the week. Last year he secured 17th place.

Paul ShoesmithLater in the same day, Shoesmith, 50, crashed on Sulby Straight during a solo practice session. The Englishman had made his Isle of Man TT debut in 2005, his highest-placing finish coming in 2011 when he earned 15th place in both the Superbike and Senior Race competitions.

In a somewhat cruel twist of fate, in the hours before his crash Shoesmith had achieved the fastest ever lap time of his career. In the Superbike Race he had earned a 125.896-mph lap time, putting him 29th in the race.

According to partner site Motor1.com, Beare and Shoesmith were the 249th and 250th racers to have died on the Isle of Man TT Mountain Course.
