2011 Formula 1 - Official Thread

Ok, its only official because I say it is, but I did this last year, and thought I should do it again this year.

This year’s off season was relatively calm compared to last year, as far as driver/team changes goes.

Here is a quick look at notable technical/rules changes for 2011
- Tire supplier has changed from Bridgestone to Pirelli
- KERS will be allowed again, after FOTA agreed not to use it for 2010
- Cars will have mandatory 46/54 (F/R) weight ratio
- F-Duct systems are banned, replaced by driver adjustable rear wing systems, but is restricted in it’s use. For instance the car must be within 1 second of car in front, the system is not usable within first 2 laps of the race (unless there is an early safety car), and it is only allowed to be used on designated parts of the circuit. Markings will be placed on the track to designate this passing zone, and provide visual identification of the 1 sec gap needed.
- Double rear diffusers have been banned, as have exhaust-blown diffusers where hot, fast-moving exhaust is directed over the diffuser.
- There are also a number of aerodynamic changes to limit the use of extraneous aero devices, ban the connection of the engine cowling to the rear wing, ban aero wheel spokes, and prohibit the use of flexible front wing elements.
- Gearboxes must last 5 races now instead of 4.
- The 107% qualifying rule has been reinstalled.
- Team orders are allowed, but any team using coded messages meant to deceive fans or other teams will be penalized.

Also F1 races will now be broadcast in true HD!!

Now for the team lineups and schedules

Check out Renault's work around to the banning of exhaust blown diffusers. Instead of the exhaust going over the diffuser it is actually directed forward, and sucked through the diffuser.

Red Bull is also implementing an exhaust-blown diffuser, but doesn't use a long forward exiting exhaust, and exploits a loop hole in the rules allowing the outer 5cm of the diffuser to be exposed at the front.

And photos of a fire on Massa's car show Ferrari is also directing exhaust gases into the starter hole of the diffuser

All these come from Craig Scarborough's site which is a very good resource for techinical F1 information.

With Daytona having a new surface, I think they should run an F-1 race there. There isn't a bad seat in the house and you can see the entire track(kinda) from the stands.

There is an airport close by, a beach close by, a highway close by, many hotels close by, and plenty of parking (close by).

If anyone sees Bernie in the near future, tell him he needs to get F-1 at Daytona.

Anyone interested in owning a piece of Williams?

They are going public in March.

Looks like Kubica banged himself up pretty good in a rally car crash this weekend. May not be able to start the F1 season.

Yikes, always liked Kubica. I'm sure he will bounce back, but yeah, the beginning of the season looks doubtful. Of course everyone thought the same for Webber's broken leg, but I think that was earlier in the off season.

Kubica woke up and was able to move his fingers. May need another surgery to repair his elbow and shoulder.

Added Virgin release pictures to post 2.

Test times are updated. A lot of variety at the top, but this is testing so teams are trying all kinds of different things.

Also nice to see the teams running decals saying "Speedy recovery Robert" in polish.

Kubica is undergoing a final surgery on his elbow on wednesday, and his doctor's say he is making good progress.

Nick Heidfeld tested for Renault, and is the leading candidate to be Kubica's substitute.

Kubica needs prayers

Quote:
Feb.14 (GMM) Robert Kubica's condition has worsened over the weekend, according to his girlfriend.

Polish news channel TVN 24 quoted the Renault driver's partner Edyta as saying Kubica is not as well as he was before his latest surgery.

"His state has somewhat worsened, both in regards to his physical and psychological state," she said.

Kubica, 26, had been removed from intensive care but he is back, Edyta Witas confirmed.

"Robert has had worse days, but he is strong and he knows that staying in ICU is the best solution for him. His life is not in danger," she clarified.

Conflicting news stories. I read that he was in ICU because they didn't want him to go through a ward change before his final surgery, and that he was making great progress. Time will tell, but I hope everything goes well. It is a shame, Renault looks to have a good car this year, and the man that could really do something special with it won't be able to drive it.

Hopefully the Bahrain test and race will go as plan. Wake up people your rights are secondary to our race schedule, quit being so selfish.

I believe there is some car ownership involved also. The Royal family and McLaren.

That is true, partial ownership.

It is official. The terrorists have won.

They talked about that on Wind Tunnel last night. Did you catch it? IIRC, they said that the upstarts don't give two hoots about F1, and were they to win, there is a low probability of F1 staying.

Right, they see the race as remaining sign of the royal family, and probably wouldn't want to keep it. I'm fine with that. Australia should be the first race anyway, and with new races in the US next year and later Russia, something has to give. Despite what Bernie thinks they can't keep adding races and expect the same level. We see it now when a team falls behind the just stop development, and start focusing on the following year.

If losing Bahrain means they don't do something stupid like dropping a classic European track than I am all for it.
