Idle Speed, Choke, and Throttle Hunting on a New-to-me '07

Hello,

I have a new-to-me '07 with 1700 miles on it. When warming up with the choke on, the throttle seems to drift up to around 4000 rpm. If I tweak the choke to idle around 2000, the engine starts to sputter and threatens to stall.

Is that normal?

I was riding the bike this evening for the first time, and I noticed it seems to like to idle around 4500 RPM, which seems really high. I twisted the idle knob and it got very loose, but I was able to drop the idle speed down to about 2500.

Is the idle-adjuster screw locked into the carb? Can I accidentally back it out by unscrewing it all the way?

The bike had been sitting for about a year before I bought it, and it might have gas from last year in it (I'm not sure), could that affect this?

Once warmed up, the bike seems to idle smoothly, though a bit fast. I'm not very familiar with bikes, but the throttle might be a wee touch sticky as well, before I adjusted the idle, sometimes it would stick at 5500 or 5000 rpm, and if I blipped the throttle it would drop to 4500. Is that normal?

Thanks for any advice you might have!

try running some fuel system cleaner through the bike for a couple of tanks and see if it improves. I like seafoam, but berryman's has a good following as well.

Carbs need to be cleaned out, especially the idle jet passages and the air bleed tubes. My '06 had 2,042 miles when I got it in February of '09 and I had the same problems; it took a full dismantling and cleaning of the carbs to get things working properly. Also, drain the old gas out of the tank and put fresh in, and install a real fuel filter in the fuel line. That'll save lots of grief down the road.

I use Brakleen (red can, not green can) and compressed air to clean everything, including dismantling the choke mechanisms. Don't get any on the rubber diaphragms under the hats.
