New BEASTLY exhaust
I have recently put a new exhaust on my Ninjette. Turns out not too many people have heard of the brand, Delkevic. I wanted to make this post to show that you don't need to spend $400+ for a well-known slip-on like Akrapovic, M4, Yoshimura, or MPG. This exhaust only cost me $200 and sounds like a BEAST.

I like how it says it's not intended for road use. Pssh! lol This is seriously the first aftermarket that I've heard that sounded sick enough to spend the money. It actually sounds a lot like the Kerker on my CB.

Totally agree. That's why I was completely stoked when I found out that it was louder than expected. Dumbass drivers may not be able to see our ninjettes, so why not let them hear instead?

I beg to differ. My exhaust isn't quite as loud as a Harley but people usually know that they are around even when they can't see them, therefore drivers are likely to be more alert. My MSF instructor even agreed that they can increase driver's attentiveness but can make your engine run hotter.

I completely agree that a rider's awareness and second nature to react is key, but I don't see the harm in making a little extra noise.
Don't be so quick to judge. That "idiot" instructor taught me how to be safe rider and has been a motorcycle cop for over 20 years. I can't speak for him, but I'd like to think he has some wisdom on the subject.

I'd like to hear his justification for exhaust making the bike run hotter then...
I just think loud exhausts (like yours) are obnoxious. I'm sure you wear ear plugs too right?

Then you must also think Harleys and classic cars with 454's and longtube headers sound obnoxious too, right?
To each his own. I think you misinterpreted the sentence about the bike running hotter. He mentioned that as a trade-off, as in people will be more alert around you with a loud pipe installed but the engine can run hotter.

^ I was wondering how a loud exhaust could make the engine hotter. With my basic understanding of the engine I can't picture any reason for a heat increase.

If they are on the street at not at the track with the over bearing exhaust note....yes
Every man loves the classic cars but those cars can have what ever "headers" they choose as long as that add a thing called a muffler... Final note: An after-market exhaust will NOT make your bike run any hotter unless you do not tune it properly. oh, and no word on those ear plugs huh?

Oh I see. I'm not sure about that either. I was always told the more backpressure you have the hotter the engine, so I assume it was in relation to that.

I never intended this to be an argument, I just wanted to share a little clip of my exhaust and save people some money.
And I'm pretty sure I'm right about backpressure... http://www.aa1car.com/library/exhaust_backpressure.htm "The classic symptoms of too much backpressure include things like a lack of high speed power, poor fuel economy and even overheating. Anything that backs up exhaust pressure into the engine will also back up heat."

^ Is there are direct correlation between an increase in noise and an increase in back pressure? I figure there isn't and in which case you can get a noisy exhaust that maintains the same level of back pressure as the stock ninjette exhaust and therefore (according to the back pressure-heat ideas you linked too) no difference in engine heat would be observed.
Edit: I don't know much about this stuff btw: just thinking out loud. No idea if you're right or wrong! It just doesn't sit well with in my mind with the knowledge I already have that's all. |

The correlation should be: the increase in noise, decrease in back pressure.
The loud sound you are hearing is the amount of air coming out of the exhaust. The more air, the more noise. Also, the more air that can flow, the lower the back pressure. EDIT: Justin beat me to it. I feelingz r hurt. |

The way a free flowing exhaust will make your engine run hotter is if you don't do any carb tuning at all after opening up the exhaust, and the bike is running lean.
Whatever your view is on the loud pipes saving lives thing, wear earplugs whenever you ride a motorcycle. It doesn't matter what exhaust system you have, wear earplugs. They cut wind noise (which is a god send) and from my experience, make hearing your own bike easier because the really cut the high volume over-load, which makes differentiating between noises easier. Also, no matter how "quiet" a helmet is, wearing earplugs in that helmet will always be quieter than just wearing that helmet. [/rant] |

Why are you pointing the finger at me? There are several others in this thread that share the same opinions as me and you choose to single me out?
When did I come to the conclusion that loud pipes save lives? I just like to hear the throttle when I twist it; the stock muffler doesn't give that. I'd also like to point out that the video of my rev is filmed in a 2-door garage with the doors closed. The echo makes the exhaust sound louder than it really is. Again, to each his own. I have my opinions, you have yours.
