HELP!!! New ninja wont stay running; suggestions?
I just bought an '09 Ninja with 1K miles for $2600. No problems but one big one:
Shortly after starting, the engine dies.. OR if it does manage to idle, it dies as soon as the throttle is touched. I've been trying carb cleaner and gum-out to no avail. The bike has barely been ridden, and I was told the bad gas (from sitting in garage for almost a year) was drained and replaced. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, I just wanna ride soo bad and I'm so depressed she's not running. Thanks! Camron |

Has there been any mods done to it? I would check the gas lines to make sure they're not kinked. What about choke? The ninja's are very cold blooded so this time of year, choke is necessary on almost every start. I'm also assuming you've got a charged battery in there. Good luck. I'm sure the more experienced riders here can be of more help.

Also try messing with the idle mine had that problem when I first bought it and it was because the bikes idle was a bit too low but you can't tell that when you are starting it up. Try upping it a bit and if it stays on ride around a bit then get the idle to spec although I have mine idle at 1500

Did the previous owner mess with it any? Put a fuel filter on or anything? You playing around with full choke, half choke, or leaving it off? Each bike is a little different.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions
There are no mods on the bike, just new spark plugs and possibly a new OEM air filter The fuel lines are not kinked, I thought they may be gummed so I used gum-out. I use the choke on start-up and have even tried messing with it. I've messed with the idle adjustment but an idle problem should be compenstable by using a little bit of throttle on start-up. It's feeling like a fuel delivery problem; like its not getting enough fuel after it fires up. Keep the suggestions coming, please. Thanks! Camron |

When you said it dies when you give it throttle, did you give it enough time to warm up and with full choke on? I know that if it's not fully warmed up, throttle will kill it very very quickly. It could also help if you shimmed the carb needles. Mine needed the shimming otherwise it would die the second I gave it throttle.
Hopefully somebody else can come up with other ideas. |

I haven't done any work to the bike so far, and I've never tuned a carb, but I've got a shop manual so I'll tear it down tomorrow and basically make sure its all clean and working properly (I.e float, needle and jet adjustments).
Otherwise, I gotta give up and take it to a shop Camron |

when you clean the carbs, be sure to remove the main and pilot jets and blow them clean with compressed air and the passages they screw into. make sure you can see through the jets clearly.

Success!! before and after below..
I finally fixed it today!!
It took me six hours total.. I pried the tank, seat and farings off, removed the battery, slid the airbox back, and removed the carbs. When I opened them up, I found out what 8 months in a shed does to a bike, EVERYTHING was clogged with gunk that my Gum-Out© had no hope of clearing. I disassembled and cleaned everything in a mineral bath with brass brushes, welding tip cleaners (for the jets) and pipe cleaners. When I put it all back together, it fired up first try and sounded beautiful. The local Velocity Powersports quoted me $450 for carb cleaning and tuning. I spent $30 bucks total for using my local garage's bike lift. I'm so happy I had the balls to DIY on my first carb job. Thanks for all the help and suggestion guys! Before and after pics are posted. I was going to say the same thing. Needle shimming at that time would have been most convenient. Congratz. Now if you find that warm up takes too long or it doesnt pull very well at the beginning, you might give the shimming and snorkel thing a try. Fix that in a jiffy. Enjoy.

Can you explain the shimming and snorkel thing for me? What does it do and how is it accomplished?
Thanks, Camron
