Blowing tail fuse after changing brake light.

I just replaced my tail light (2357) because of a broken filament and as soon as I turned the key the tail circuit fuse popped.
I checked for exposed wires or damage to the bulb socket and didn't see anything, replaced the fuse and it blew again.
I tried a standard 1157 bulb and the lights came on when I turned the key but shortly into my ride the fuse blew again.

Everything was functioning perfectly before changing the bulb so I'm having a hard time understanding the issue.

I'm going to buy a multimeter on my way home but I've never used one and would really appreciate some advice.
Or if someone has had this issue maybe you can point me in the right direction.

Definitely a short somewhere. Which filament was burned out? The tail light or the brake light?

If its the brake light, check the lines from front brake and rear brake switch. If its the tail light than check the wires from the fuse box to the tail light.

It was the tail light. Brake light was still working when I first changed the bulb, and when I put the 1157 bulb in both tail and brake worked for maybe 1 minute.

On the positive side, riding at night with no tail, brake, or gauge lights makes you a super safe rider.

Not sure about safe, maybe an overly cautious rider.

May have this fixed, both battery terminals were loose.
I haven't taken it for a ride yet but the lights are back on for now.

So it seems I spoke too soon. I got a day of riding with the 1157 bulb in place with no issues, decided to put the 2357 back in and the fuse popped.

The fun part is I have to ride to and from work in the dark for 2 more days before I'll have time to dig into this again.

May it be that the size of fuse is too small?

Taillight fuse (#4) should be 10 Amps.

I've been using 10 amp fuses, and the bulb it seems to hate so much is the exact model I used for about a year with no issue. It's clearly cursed.

The combination position/brake bulb only draws around 3.0 Amps when both filaments are on.
The wires will start melting above 10 Amps; hence, the fuse limiting 10 Amps circulating through the circuit.

It seems to me that you have an intermittent short circuit, associated to vibrations.
It could be damaged skin of a wire contacting ground (negative), or a part of the socket of the bulb.

Normally, the problem is in the last area that we have been messing with.

the tail light harness can rub on the frame and short out check near the bottom of the tray under the pillion seat.

last time i had a short, i jumped the fuse with a 12 gauge wire and looked for where the smoke was coming from, quick and easy.

i don't recommend doing that by the way.....

also, buy an R6, LED tail lights, no need to worry about changing them and screwing up your wiring.

I actually had this thought this morning...

I took a closer look at the socket and the outer most pin had moved out of position, it looks like depending on how the bulb is inserted the pin can contact the outer wall and short. I forced the pin down further into the base and everything is working again. I'll give it a few days to see if anything else pops up and then replace the socket just to be safe.

Thank you for all your assistance, you guys are great!
