Didn't realize I could strip that fast!
SO, I was riding home from work today and could have sworn that I heard a bee buzzing near me when I stopped for gas, but with ear plugs, helmet, full gear, etc I decided it was probably my imagination... While pulling into the station my cell phone vibrated, so I also checked my phone to see what it wanted, and I guess I didn't finish zipping up my jacket, so it was just a little open where the inside pocket is... as it's less than a mile to my house, I didn't feel like stopping, but could have sworn it felt like something was crawling on me...
So I get home, get off the bike, dump the back pack, get out of the jacket and riding pants, head back out towards the top of the driveway to check the mail and hear the buzzzzz again... now the folks I work with on a daily basis can attest that I may not be all there, but I'm not that crazy... so I look down and perched on my sweater was a huge honey bee.... ****! I'm allergic to bees.... so I very carefully pulled my sweater away from my chest and try to shake it a little to get it off of me.... it buzzes and flies maybe 3 inches.... now it's even lower on my chest... I try again... it stays with me, though the buzzing sounded more angry if that is possible.... well now what do I do? I didn't want to go inside because I didn't want it in the house as the hubby is also allergic, so I pulled the sweater as far away from my skin as I could and snatched it over my head as fast as possible while throwing it into a pile in the middle of the garage floor! I then attempted to cover myself for a little modesty, and ran inside to find a new top... after checking in with the hubby to let him know I made it, but may perish at the hands of a mad bee, I went out and very carefully turned my sweater right side out, and the little creep was still there! I shook him off and watched him crawl in circles around my garage floor before returning inside... I think I lucked out and he did try to sting me, but it got stuck in the jacket/sweater etc.... my best guess is that he's still dying slowly in the garage.... little freak....

A big 5 pounder landed on my buddies shirt, on his back near his neck, and it was just sitting there..When me and a few other friends noticed and told him, he froze and turned white..He slowly started 2 remove his shirt, but as he started getting it off he must of panicked and just ripped it off, and the bee stung the shi* outta him..

You're just not having a good time with the bees this year. Guess it's my turn next since Nick had his last weekend?

Kim the little guy was just attracted to your sweetness. There shouldn't be any mystery there. Glad he didn't get to sample the honey.

Similar story happened to me last year.
Cruisin down a back road about 5 miles from work in the morning when a bee manages to get himself in my sleeve. I knew it was still alive as I felt it crawling around my arm but I figured I would still try to make it to work before I did anything. I get to work and try to take off my jacket without upsetting it. Didnt work though, I still get stung... So I go into work tell them I will be heading to MediCall since I am allergic. Lucky for me it is only another 3 miles down the road. Made it just in time for the swelling and vommiting to begin. As I am laying there recovering, I am watching Monk. It just happens to be the episode where there was a murder trying to be played off as a bee sting from a honey farm.

A couple of times on long trips, I've gotten off my bike for gas or food and a dead bee is on my crotch. That's why I never go on trips without my riding pants. Bee impervious!

Whats with us and bees? I found it hard to believe that a bee could get inside your helmet while you were riding.... until it happened to me! And now they are in your clothes too!

I had a bee hit me at full speed on an unprotected spot on my neck. Instant pain and surprise. Almost lost control. It's funny how the little fellow could find that one little place to cause the most trouble. I put it down to another learning experience.

I was looking at a yellow 250 when that idea came to me. Never did hear back from that person which is pretty common for the Craig's list bikes.

I never understand this irrational fear of bees. Even if you ARE allergic, bees don't just randomly go around stinging people for fun.
Option 1 - Just hang out and let the bee do what its gotta do and leave = .1% chance of sting. Option 2 - FREAK OUT!!!! Rip your clothes off as fast as possible assaulting the bee with various fabrics until he gets pissed enough to sting you = 43% chance of sting. ......IMHO |

Here's the thing about me and bees.
If bee = honeybee then Remain calm. I love honey, and grew up near a honey farm. I used to walk between the hives on the way home from the bus stop. I have no problem or issues with honey bees. If bee != honeybee then Freak out! I think this stems from my irrational fear of needles. I've managed to overcome most of my fear by working at a Vet for a year and assisting the Vets and Techs with shots for cats and dogs. I can actually get shots now without fainting or getting sick. My stomach still gets upset though. So, a stinger is kinda like a needle... Why honey bees don't affect me this way I don't know... It's about the only thing I'm really afraid of. Edit: The first time I found a bee on my crotch at a stop, I had to sit down for a few minutes to catch my breath. The last couple of times it hasn't bothered me. Yes, I'm a wuss with bees. |

Yellow-jackets aggressively swarmed all over my bike in Newnan, GA last Fall. There was no nest nearby... they were just attracted to it for some reason. Even at stop lights many miles away I'd attract a few before I could drive off. They weren't interested before the late season behavioral changes. In case it's color-related, I have '08 CP Blue.

I have a blue 07 and notice they like my bike more then my wife's red 07. I believe this is because blue is closer to and reflects more ultraviolet light then most other bike colors. Most flowers are very bright in ultraviolet, even though they are not blue in visible light.
EDIT: Just found this at: http://ag.arizona.edu/pubs/insects/ahb/inf2.html Honey bees and people do not see eye to eye. Although honey bees perceive a fairly broad color range, they can only differentiate between six major categories of color, including yellow, blue-green, blue, violet, ultraviolet, and also a color known as "bee's purple," a mixture of yellow and ultraviolet. Bees can not see red. Differentiation is not equally good throughout the range and is best in the blue-green, violet, and bee's purple colors. So, they can't see my wife's red bike, but CAN see my blue bike... |
