Speedo Came Off!
Speedo CABLE that is
went for a short evening ride and had actually traveled about a mile thru residential area until i noticed...no speedo reading..odometer and trip meter no werkie... got to gas station and noted the speedo cable from forks to front wheel hub was hang'in kinda low...upon further review, i realized it wasnt connected at the top! thought it was broken at first but saw the threaded connector and understood that it had worked itself loose over time as i have done no maintenance anywhere near that stuff. (speedo cable is circled #3 in diagram) (..and my bike didnt have that 'clamp' at headlight) Speedo Cable.jpg made sure it was secure for the ride home, and once in the garage, before looking anything up i saw where it went to and tried to reconnect. isnt quite reachable from the bottom up, so had to work between instrument cluster, handle bars and forks from the top-down...and still couldn't connect it. THEN i looked at the manual and saw the positioning of that bend in the metal piece fitted at the top end of cable. routing the cable and aligning that metal section from the bottom was easiest, then tightened connector up top. reconnected! ops check good! thinking about it later, i did have some clue the cable was working itself loose. the last time i refueled and reset the trip meter it didn't work for the first mile or two...speedo was fine but for some reason trip meter didnt turn. just an afterthought... wanted to fyi my adventure... friday nights just are NOT what they used to be aloha

This is actually a fairly common problem with with both the EX250s and the EX500s. If you didn't do it this time, I HIGHLY recommend Locktite on the threads when you put the cable back on. The same thing happened to me one night, so I googled it and found that others have had the same problem.

Same thing happened to my 2007 N-250. Just vibrates itself off. Screwed it back on up under the dash tightly and it behaved itself from then on. But its hell to get the angle when you are in a hurry. (doesn't it seem some things just end up seeming pornographic when you work on a bike)
