Engine dies during cold starts, normal?

My bike starts fine in summer, now its getting colder. I turn on the choke to start the bike, it starts fine also but after a few seconds it shuts off itself. After second starts, it dies again. Third start, same thing. To fix the problem, I usually give it a little gas to rev the engine slightly (3-4k rpm) for about 5-10 seconds. Then I can let go and the bike will keep running.

I am wondering if this is normal?

Either your choke cable is improperly adjusted or your warm engine idle speed is too low. Your idle speed should be around 2-3k rpms with the choke on. The idle speed with the choke on should start low and increase as the engine warms up.
Your warm engine idle speed should be 1350 +/- 50 rpms. It should be adjusted when the bike is fully warmed.

when choke is on and steady, the rpm is 4-5k. Normal idle speed is around 1500

I kept my operating temperature idle at 1500 rpm (fully warmed up). On cold days with choke fully open, the bike will sit at 2-3.5k rpm. As it warms up, the revs with rise to around 3.5-5k. I usually leave it at full choke until the rpm's naturally go up to 5.5k with 100% choke before I cut choke completely and ride. Another method I began to use more commonly was to use 100% choke to start the bike, then adjust the choke to allow 2-2.5k rpm and ride conservatively for 5 minutes, then shut off the choke completely and ride normally.

Your rpm speed is too high with the choke on. Your starting difficulty is due to your choke being too rich. By turning the throttle, you open up the butterflies, that allows more air in to help with the rich choke mixture. That's why you are able to start it.

Ideally it should be under 3k (manual says 2.5K) You should check to make sure you have enough free play in your choke lever (2-3 mm) at the bottom of the choke lever. You can also reduce the amount of choke you use to start up too, if you don't know how to adjust your cable.

This! Too much choke...and RPMs!

Use just enough choke to keep it running around 2500 and no more. Let it idle for a couple of minutes, then ride moderately to warm it up, keeping the revs lower until fully warm. It will warm up completely a lot faster riding than idling.

I've had this problem too. I've read that the best way to warm up is to ride, but if I ride too quickly, she just died as I go to a stop for a stop sign. I usually try to keep her around 3k with choke and as she warms up, I slowly lessen choke to get her back to 3k.

mine does the same. just lean

if i leave the bike outside in the frost overnight i cannot start the bike until i flood the engine.

put the choke on, hold it flat for 10sec, then try to start.

summer i dont need the choke at all.

every bike is different

The choke is not an on or off device. It is an analog thing and gas many shades of on. You should try giving it 2/3-3/4 choke instead of full choke so itgr bike idles around 2500 rpm while first started.
