Ruh-roh - dodged a bullet

Lookee what I found in my rear tire today: A nice, shiny finishing nail.

The good news is that I think the tire's okay. It was near-horizontal so I'm very confident it didn't penetrate the full depth of the tread. The tire's not leaking but we'll see... I taped a tire gauge over my ignition switch to remind myself to check the pressure before I go riding next time.

Made me think, though... just what goes into the judgment call on whether a nailed tire is okay? In this case, given the angle of the nail and the amount of tread remaining, it didn't go as deep as the grooves do... so therefore safe IMHO.

As long as there is no leakage you should be fine. Good catch! It's always better to find a potential problem sooner than later.

its not a judgement call... it's either holding air or its not. you can put water over it and see bubbles if its leaking. if you have a hole you can stuff the hole with rubber glue

I pour some water over it and watch for bubbles, of course when out in the field... spit works too.

I've pulled similar small nails out of my back tire on a few occasions and never had a problem.

One thing I've noticed about tire punctures: I've had maybe a half dozen over the last 20 years, and they were all in the back tire. My theory is that the front tire flicks nails laying on the ground upright, and then the rear tire gets stabbed.

Yeah, that's the wet spot on the tire. It's my own proprietary blend of leak detection fluid: Hawkaloogie(tm).

Alex, the judgment would come into play if the nail had gone in deeper. It might have gotten to the cords but not actually penetrated... I can envision a scenario where the tire is JUST able to hold air -- then you go riding and under the added load of cornering it lets go.

I can't imagine something like this would cause a catastrophic failure, but it sure would be a bummer.

This bike -- and these tires, most likely -- will be hitting the track in July. So things that might otherwise be benign take on new meaning.....

Patch it from inside if you're worried. Otherwise, if it holds air you should be fine.
