79 GL1000 66K Miles
It looks like it was well taken care of, no signs of abnormal wear by looking at it. Needs new tires and appears to be a shaft drive. The guy is asking 2,800. Is this a good buy or should I shy away?

Depends if you're up for doing your own maintenance, or if you have a private mechanic that likes working on 35 year old bikes. No dealership will touch it, and many/most mechanics will shy away as well, as there is never enough profit compared to the risk once you try and diagnose just about anything. (i.e. replacing one part begets another part begets another part begets another part etc.)

I figured it was going to be a high risk but, albeit a pretty rad bike.

I make mistake
Learn from my mistakes. Whenever I bought a motor vehicle that I thought I wanted, the maintenance was a pita. Whenever I bought a motor vehicle I KNEW that I wanted, I would and will put up with just about anything because I wanted the vehicle in the first place. Maintenance was kinda fun because I was learning about this really cool vehicle I was into.
If you really want this model, have done your research, and still really want it, buy it. If it was something you just stumbled upon, don't. |
