What’s my break in period for a new piston?

My 2001 ninja 250 was running too lean on one cylinder and one of the pistons had a hole in it so we replaced it. One new piston and rings. How many miles should I be babying my engine? Everything is old but the new piston and ring set.

How do you pronounce the town you live in, LI TITZ? I have family in that area (Highspire, Middletown) but have never heard of Li Titz! I hear it's the 'Coolest Small Town in America'. I was wondering what makes it so "Cool"? Could it be the Li Titz or is there another reason that is not so apparent?

Lit its there are a bunch of old shops and stuff, not that cool to a 17 yr old kid, but there is a lot of tourism.

Did you have cylinders honed and cross-hatched?
Did you put in single-weight break-in oil?

The cylinders were honed cross hatching is good. I used 10w-40 (recommended) conventional oil.

The owners manual recommended 10w-40. My dad says conventional is better for breaking in, compared to synthetic (what I normally run).

Mechanics I know have recommended conventional oil for the break in period.

Break-in is more for seating the rings than anything to do with the actual piston. To seat the rings you want cylinder pressure. That means load. Moderate loads with a variation in RPMs is usually recommended, as is some heat-cycling.

I've been told by a high-end (Porsche, Ferrari, Nascar and NHRA experience) engine builder that extended break-in time isn't needed if the machine-work has been done properly. He said oil isn't critical (synthetic isn't any more "slippery" than conventional oil as long as it has the correct additive package - no "Friction Modifiers"), but he likes to change it fairly quickly after the engine has been run a while (complete rebuild, after running maybe an hour). So just run an inexpensive conventional oil that's motorcycle compatible like Rotella T. Don't run any automotive oil in a cycle engine.

That's pretty much in-line with what I thought, but there are many opinions on the subject.
