KENT County Council’s Motorcycle Safety campaign is reminding bikers of the increased hazards at this time of year.

Winter brings icy roads, fallen leaves and longer periods of rain and the campaign aims to reduce the "disproportionate number" of casualties on Kent’s roads.

Motorcyclists make up for 1% of road users in Kent but are involved in 25% of all crashes.

Over the last three years 351 bikers were killed or seriously injured (KSI) on Kent roads, 62% of which were riding bikes over 500cc.

Steve Horton, Kent County Council's road safety team leader, said: “During this time of year there are different obstacles that bikers need to look out for in order to ensure that they have a safe and enjoyable ride. Less daylight hours and the lower sun make bikers more vulnerable and it is therefore important to ensure they are riding safely."

The campaign is working closely with the Kent Bikers website who are offering riding tips, skills training, safety videos and targeting the safety of younger riders aged 16-19 through their sister website Ghostlids.
