New Bike... it's becoming an obsession

For my fifth ride, I though long and hard about between a Street Triple and an FZ07. Having ridden a Triple some time in the past and the FZ07 recently, I loved both. At the end it came down to looks... I could not get over those Triumph bug eyes and the overweight front console, as viewed from the rider's position. Too bad, but there's little point in spending $10K on something that you're amlost in love with.

So the FZ07 it is. A solid, plain, badass bike. Once it warms up I will give a ride report. Should be a fun ride.

The FZ-07 is great. We have the gayified reduced capacity MT-07 in Aus, and Yamaha aren't selling the FZ-07 here. Arseholes!

Here she is, sorry for the cr@ppy cellphone pic... it's too cold to take her out. In a showroom, with tons of bikes like VMax and Star around, she looked cozy and small. In a garage, she looks total badass. I already ordered LED turn signals and tail tidy.

Dunno, lol. I got screwed twice: once with the brand new 2012 Triumph where I let her drown in Sandy (still kicking myself for that one). Then I got screwed with the 500F, a nice bike for sure, but more of a rebound bike than a genuinely engaging ride. Kept her way too long... it was fun, but a test ride of the FZ07 ended that affair for good.

So I'll keep mum for now

So after a month of hibernation I was able to take her out for a spin around da 'hood. I rode her gingerly, and the bike obliged, with a bit of character and vibe showing through. At first I gave a bit too much throttle and she lurched forward, but it was easy to moderate and keep it tame.
A puppy, happy to play,is the best way to describe it. Front brake is a bit spongy, and front forks are a bit harsh. Not much of a b!tchlist, TBH. She's certainly a hundred times more fun than the Cb500... Great fit & finish, ample power, tons of character... Even the often-ridiculed rear shock (cranked way up for my porky weight) felt great. Yet at some point I started wondering why didn't I just go straight for the Triple...
I won't lie, Triple is a better ride. So is CBR600, with its jet-like engine and telepathic handling. The 07 is none of these... Nor is she some sort of iconic, metal & leather V twin. She's just a fun little bike with a heartbeat, that loves to rev... And a bike with absolutely fantastic feel in turns. Like it is your own self, soaring a few feet above the road, leaning in turns all on your own. Its digital console is also low enough and out of the way... This is a bike which, despite its vibey engine, does not impose iself in the delicate relationship between the rider and the road... instead, it sort of disappears underneath you. This is a remarkable feeling, something I hope to enjoy for a quite a while.

Here she is with the ugly tail and pumpkin-style signals gone for good.

I firmly believe that that bike (and the 09 triple for that matter) is capable of getting telepathic handling out of it with a few grand in suspenision/brake work. The same can be said of any bike though.

There have been a couple of more recent long-term tests of the FZ-09, that disagreed with that assessment. Ari and others have instead come to the conclusion that the issues with the triple (suspension, fuel-mapping, handling), weren't ultimately fixable without spending so much on the bike, that the total cost brings it well past the all-in cost of superior machines. But - at the same time, they are raving over the FJ-09, which has apparently fixed many of the issues with the FZ, meaning that the second generation of the FZ-09 might be almost as impressive a debut as the first one.

Less press about the FZ-07 in general, but it seems to be a bit better-loved out of the gate than its big brother.

I am getting mixed feelings... I rode her on a hwy today, and she is fun to ride fast: great pull, yet you can feel the engine working... much more visceral experience than on a silky smooth super sport. And turns are simply divine...

The foot pegs are a bit too far forward, but that can be fixed. Yet I am thinking that maybe I got the wrong bike.. Ridden conservatively, she feels a bit bland. This can be said of many bikes, but not all. I think I would enjoy Triumph more, or maybe something even less powerful but more special like Moto Guzzi. She is OK when ridden hooligan-style, and is plenty of fun for the city streets, but something is missing... I don't know what.

This may be a stupid question, but did you try riding a Bonneville or Thruxton?

Nope, I haven't... the dealer, bless him , didn't remember me, but after hearing that I used to have a STriple, flat out refused to demo me a Bonnie, saying "these bikes are nice to look at, but if you liked your Triple, you won't enjoy riding these".

I had a test ride on Honda CB1100 not long ago, and liked it... That bike felt very special, but a bit too civilized. There was no edge to it, no spice, so to speak. The 07's got the spice... But if you forgive the pun, the 07 feels more like a big, rough, evil twin of the CB500, rather something genuinely different. Comparing them is like apples to bad apples , but I'm not bananas over it

Well, more miles bring out more smiles. The bike has a lovely dual nature: she's quite smooth at low RPM, with a distinct vibe above 4000. So you actually have a choice as to which engine character to invoke; you're not stuck with either one. This is something that neither CBR500 nor even CBR600 could boast about. Well, the 600rr does have a Jekyl-n-Hide personality, but it's silky smooth at both. For the 07, the difference in engine character is profound. About 3K rpm in third makes a city cruisin' smooth as butter, and revving up from there calls for some nice, and vibey, pull.

The bike's design also makes easy job of different cornering styles: you can ride in a typical streetbike style, sitting totally upright in the leans, or corner like on a sportbike, by hooking the upper leg and leaning lower and sideways on the tank. While she ain't a sportbike, she's comfy enough and pleasant enough for either style... with the latter instilling lots of confidence, which I found quite welcome.

On the highway, at about 75mph, the wind blast is saying that you're going fast enough, yet the bike is capable of leaving traffic well behind, probably all the way up to triple digits. Given this is a break-in period, I can't really say

I don't know yet how well she will do on the long trips... Ride at low RPM is smooth and comfy, but there's no real pull. Downshifting gets you in the fun zone and good acceleration on the tap, but it's a bit too vibey for comfort. We'll ride and see.

Me either. I think it has the potential, and we will see some really sweet ones that are customized but stock; to me at least, it kinda looks clunky and cobbled together.
