[American Motorcyclist Association] - AMA Dirt Track Grand Championship kicks off wit

The weather was beautiful for a great day of mile racing on the first day of the AMA Dirt Track Grand Championship in Du Quoin, Ill. The track was in excellent shape, thanks to the hard work of the AMA prep crew -- very fast and very tacky, as shown by the multitude of close racing throughout the day.

Safety was a main focus for the day's events. Riders were invited to take a "mile walk" with some well-known fast guys. AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Chris Carr was on hand, along with current pro racers Jared Mees, Brad Baker and Johnny Lewis. The riders answered questions and shared tips about everything from drafting to focal points. They returned on race day to offer assistance, and were joined by many other notable experienced racers.

Safety also was stressed during the Monday riders' meeting, and crew members conducted a thorough safety check as part of their morning track preparation.

The combination of great weather, excellent track preparation and well-prepared riders led to the inevitable result, which was unbeatable racing.

The championship hunt (and the battle for the AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award) are off to a great start!
