I really isn't that hard. Drink a bottle when u wake up before you leave the house. And one bottle at night an hr or two before bed. During the course of the day, you can easily drink 2-4 bottles depending how thirsty you are.
That's plenty if you live a relatively normal life style. I sometimes walk around with a gallon jug of water (yes, i'm one of those people). Mostly I walk around with a 65fl oz bottle and just drink it and fill it and drink it again. Free water from water fountains at my work. I save a ton of money not buying drinks hardly ever, except on occasions. I even carry a 50oz poland spring bottle (da big one at the stores for like $1.75) in my backpack when I ride my 300 around, just in case I get thirsty.

Hydration is very important. A basic rule of thumb, your urine should be clear maybe slightly yellow. You never want dark yellow urine. (although usually in the morning after sleeping it will be a little darker).

i don't know where the hell you are getting your info from but you are just flat out wrong.

clear pee means you have NOT ENOUGH ELECTROLYTES. and you ARE DEHYDRATED.

the color in your pee comes from urea which is the result of your kidnees stripping toxins from your blood. clear pee means you have not enough electrolytes to transfer toxins away from your cells into your blood stream and into your kidnees where it gets turned into urea

You're right it shouldn't be completely clear.. but it should be a pale yellow color. Not dark yellow, sorry I meant to type slightly yellow on the clearer side.

I should also add that I do eat a fair amount of sodium and calories in general. I'm sure I consume about 150% of my DV in sodium (give or take) and I probably get around 2,300 calories a day (my body maintenance)

Believe it or not, but you can get electrolytes from other sources than coconut milk..

Please read: http://www.livestrong.com/article/11...-electrolytes/

Sodium helps make electrolytes. As well as other things in your diet. Such as potassium, calcium, and Magnesium which I get an abundance of.

Here's a very basic self analysis: if your lips are dry and chap, chances are you're not drinking enough liquids.

Maybe I'm just used to it, but I crave water first thing in the morning!

Also note, a cup of coffee or tea in the morning is considered water as well since a good portion of those drinks are water based.

So for those who think it's hard chugging water, just start slow. If you can't finish a bottle of water before you leave your house, drink 1/2 the bottle. Instead of soda for lunch, drink water. With the amount of salt in today's food, it should make you thirsty enough to down a bottle for lunch.

Same goes for dinner new. Have water instead of juice.

What worked for me in the beginning was squeezing some lemon and adding a bit of honey into an ice cold bottle. It is amazing. Give that a shot.

Between the 3 bottles of water you drink daily (with breakfast, lunch and dinner) + your other beverages during the day, it should be relatively easy to get hydrated "enough". You may not get 1 gal (heck, I don't!). But it should be "good enough".

Another trick is to add wedges of orange or toss in a few raspberries or blackberries in the water. Gives it a slight zing that may help you gulp down that water.

Good luck.

I hope that hike is not less then 5 hours or that is dangerous. a typical tour de France competitor drinks about 1 liter an hour; they have the science down. If you are drinking more then they, you are over doing it.

4 Questions
How much do you need at a minimum?
How much keeps you at peak?
How much will slow you down?
How much hurts you

Edit:
tour de France competitor never drink just water.

Well, none of us are doctors. We know what works for us but really cannot speak for OP.

To OP: you should try to hydrate yourself more, whether it be more water, or coconut oil, etc. You need to do something. See your doctor try to do some of your own research online and figure out what's best for you. You've had 60 kidney stones, whatever you are doing isn't working.

I'm just concerned about you, I don't care who is right. You should try and fix this.

One gallon is a little less than four liters so do the math.

You need to do some reading in medical texts and find out what kidneys really do. Urea is colorless (and is, in fact, a solid), the color in your pee comes from urochrome, and the darker your pee is, the more water your body (kidneys) is holding back. Clear pee means your body has enough water in it and is excreting the excess. The pee is clear simply because the water dilutes the urochrome, it has nothing to do (in healthy people) with toxin transfer. In general, clear pee is fine, dark pee means you're dehydrated (not always). In general, if you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated. Go get a simple pee test if you don't believe me, I get one every year, used to get one every six months.

The amount of water you have to drink to harm yourself for a normal healthy person is so far beyond ridiculous that you don't even have to worry about it. If you've been puking, having diarrhea, or have some other health issues, then yeah, you need more than just water. Normal people? Just drink water and you're fine. Most Americans are dehydrated, most need to drink more water than they do.

Coconut water? It's a fad and marketing gimmick. It can not be safely used intravenously, and is only used in emergency situations. They used it in WWII because they didn't have anything else. It is not close to human plasma, it doesn't have enough sodium to remain in the bloodstream, and it can raise potassium and calcium to dangerous levels (when used IV). Call up any doctor in the phone book and ask him/her if they'll use coconut water to re hydrate a patient, IV or oral. Some may use it orally, none would use it IV. I'll drink coconut water over a sports drink, but I'll drink plain water over coconut water.

My doctor/acupuncturist says 1 ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight. 200#? drink 100 oz's. YMMV if exercising or wearing black leathers in August! Coffee and couches kill.

drinking a gallon of water per day is about 200% of what is healthy and is doing real damage to your kidnees.

also, water does not prevent kidnee stones. kidnee stones are caused by an assortment of disorders. i get kidnee stones all the time. it has nothing to do with my water intake.
The typical rule for proper hydration is body weight *.75= ounces to drink in an inactive day. But my work requires me to walk a lot. Then I drink another 32 ounces when working out. Combined with my vitamins and other foods, I would say I am not hurting my body. I weigh ~186. Hat is about 140oz minimum.

Want to know how much more to drink do to working out? Every now and again weigh yourself before and after a workout and do not drink anything between. The delta is how much extra you should drink.

I had kidney stones when I was in kinder. The stones were not too big so they gave me medicine that would dissolve them and I urinated the broken particles out. The particles were very small so it didnt hurt coming out. But yes, kidney stones are painful.

I normally just drink until my urine is clear and no yellow.

Well the suckiness just got suckier. Pain got even worse, so the wife drove me to the hospital this time. Come to find out, the first ER I went to on Monday didn't calculate the size of the stone correctly on the ct scan. It is 1.7 cm, not 7 mm. Definitely not passing this puppy. They admitted me and will be going under for surgical removal of the stone sometime today. wife says I am not riding the bike for a few days, ppphhhfff. Come hell or high water, I shall be riding by Tuesday.

Did you know a rat can survive longer without water than a camel?

actually drinking a gallon of water a day has alot of benefits
Water eases thirst even before it reaches your bloodstream
It cleans your kidneys and helps it to function properly
Water ensures your cognitive performance and being deprived of water can cause a serious short-term memory damage
Water keeps you happy as mild dehydration causes significant dips in the mood
Water reduces joint pain as it maintains the right amount of cushioning in your joints
Water protects your spinal cord as it is an essential part of one of the nervous system’s most powerful protective mechanisms: Cerebrospinal Fluid.
