one click, no start

I just dropped a new battery into my bike. Horn blows, lights are on, hit the starter and get one click. Who knows? And yes it's in neutral, kickstand up, clutch in and red button down. Please!

Is the gas line turned to be on??
Have you tried to clean the kickstand safety switch?

Did you charge the new battery first? Most new motorcycle batteries dont come charged until you purchase them and ask them to charge it for you.

If the starter is clicking then it is most likely functional. Hook a battery charger to it; $20 says the battery is dead. Also, I noticed the battery doesn't charge very much (if any at all) when the bike is standing still. Get it running, ride it around the block so it isn't dead when you show the bike to someone.

1. Check battery:
a. Voltage just sitting there should be no less than 12.7 volts.
b. Voltage while starter button is pushed should not drop below 10.0 volts.

2. Check starter solenoid:
a. Voltage on starter motor terminal should be present when starter button pushed.

3. If battery is good and voltage present on starter motor terminal, but it still doesn't work, remove and repair starter motor.

Here is a guy that rebuilds them if you don't know how to do it yourself. I am not recommending him, I'm just posting his information:
Quote:
Try jumping the bike off by skipping the solenoid .Pull the cable off the battery side and short it to the starter side . If it still will not turn over, it is the starter. These starters are build off the old Kz305 format. There are a very weak starter . There prone to burning up the armature. I rebuild a lot of them . also do about 150 armatures a year for a rebuilding company i rewind armatures for. My cost to rebuild starter is $59.95 plus shipping about $12.00 All my work has a year warranty . We rewind the armature with larger wire to help with the burn out problem. Tim tim@tpe-usa.com if you need details about the starter .
If you charge the battery, don't forget to disconnect the battery from the electrical system first so you don't fry the alternator. Also, don't use anything bigger than a 1 amp charger or charger made specifically for motorcycles. I've used the $3 chargers from Harbor Freight and they work good.

A remote possibility is that your engine is locked up. Try push starting it in 6th gear to see if anything happens.

Mine done the same thing, I had to take the starter motor out and clean the brushes. Fixed it up. Is that what was wrong with yours?

We've been having a lot of rain down here recently (I live fairly close to coondog). Maybe it got wet or something.

Honestly, I've never heard of a bad starter on a Ninja until this thread. But I suppose anything is possible.
