testing pulse coil
can anyone tell me how to properly test the pulse coil?

resistence check on the multimeter. i forget what good reading is, i think its like 30ohms. if it reads 0ohms or open, its bad.

i am getting 113.8 on the bad one(i think its bad) and almost 119 on the known good part

manual resistance readings
The manual (p15-19) says the pickup coil resistance should be between 100 and 150 ohms.

no fire at all from either coil
i have swapped the handle switch, side stand switch, i am going to swap the coils(but doubt that), swapped the cdi. everything seems to be hooked up right |

did you test the main coils? if they look ok in terms of resistance, check the voltage coming from the cdi into the coils. if theres no voltage there check the power for the CDI. maybe a bad regulator? its cranking so all your kill switches should be ok. im assuming your battery is in good shape?

i checked the coils, they are good, reg is good. i have a another ex sitting here. all the components will work on another bike...the one thing i cant swap that easy is the pulse coil....that should be the problem...but was wanting to be certain before i pulled it

better if you have an oscilloscope but, hook the multimeter up to it on voltage and crank it. see if you get voltage readings from the pulser coil while it cranks.
you tested the coils how? just ohms check? did you check for voltage going into the coils? if you are getting power to the coils, check the engine ground toward the back near the starter motor. if the case isnt grounded properly it obviously wont spark

check
i have a few complete electrical systems for the ninja 250...all are known good. I did not check the power going into the coil yet, but i know i have good components(except maybe the pulse coil) but i am not convinced the pulse coil is bad yet. I tested some of the other pulse coils and i have been getting readings as high as 121.8 and as low as 118.8 The pulser in this bike is reading much lower, but it sounds like it is still in range.
I will double check my grounds and i will cranks the bike and check the voltage. I will also do some of the other checks mention also |

its entirely possible you have all good components and its not working because of bad wiring or something. but until you know exactly where it stops working you'll be stuck playing guessing games. just work backwards from the problem. you know it doesn't spark so work backwards from there. is the coil getting power? is the cdi getting power? if the cdi is getting power, why isnt the cdi triggering? wrong voltage? is the pulser firing? maybe the pulser isn't aligned properly or the stator rotor is damaged? if the pulser fires and the cdi has good input voltage and none of the killswitches are stopping it and the cdi doesn't output to the coil then the cdi is definitely bad. maybe theres some kind of interference? if its wiring, ohms check from one end of the wire to the other should tell you right away. if you check the main coils and they aren't getting power, check them on the cdi side of the wiring harness as well. maybe the wiring is bad you know

i think the service manual has it. my brother is good with the wares so he has a copy that i had him print for me. maybe someone here has a copy they can give you. it has all the test values.

might be in a different location on the pregen. on the newgen it goes from the battery ground to the engine case on the starboard side behind the starter.

whats the air gap on the pulse coil? actually...does anyone have any good recommendations for an online manual i can get right away?

pulled the right cover off. the pulse coil is damaged, but still intact. oddly enough there is a nut floating around inside the cover. guessin thats my problem

well thars yer problem!
if the pulser coil isnt lined up right and gapped right the cdi wont fire correctly. i assume the nut was from the mount on the pulser coil? make sure to lock tight that little guy. i had one slip off while riding and it destroyed itself, the stator, and part of the wheel

Just for reference, if you gound the Green with Black tracer that is coming out of the ECU, it will take all the saftey switches and realys out of the equation
