Greez, you got a pic of the helmet?

I found some interesting stuff on the net about where damage happens to helmets during crashes. Over a third, according to the study, is inflicted on the chin bar. Almost zero on the top of the helmet, which of course is where Snell whacks the shell......

It's a really good argument for full-face helmets.

PS: Gloves...check out Lee Parks Design at http://www.leeparksdesign.com . Parks has strong opinions about gloves, including not being a fan of gloves with a lot of stitching... because they come apart in exactly the same way your hubby's did.

His gloves are very simple, made of deerskin and really nice. I just ordered a pair.

No, his were practically brand new. He had them for less than a month and they weren't falling apart. If I were you I'd get a new set of gloves.

I hate to say it, but that study may be a bit off. (But full face is the way to go anyways!) He got thrown off the bike (and he thinks, he doesn't remember it that well) and he landed on his head and back and then flipped over onto his left side and did most the sliding then.

There's the back and top of the helmet. The entire back fin of the Shoei got ripped clean off.

And there's the front. I don't have a pic of the chin guard, but when I get a chance to look at the helmet again I'll take a closer look. I don't remember any damage there though. The worst was on the top and back.

Mine started doing that about 2 weeks after I got them, I was going to stitch them back up myself and wait untill the mercury drops to get a new pair, but seeing how that stitching came apart in the crash Im probably gonna go see if cycle gear has any discounted warm weather gloves at bike night tomorrow.

I've stopped buying Joe Rocket. Their stuff looks cool, but my experience is it falls apart fast... I don't think I could trust them in a crash... I'm going to try to get a pair of Lee Parks gloves at the Seattle Cycle World show (he was there last year). Might take the book to get signed too

here's my bike i call him kamesane

so don't get too excited guys, this pic was taken for the bike group i belonged to, the nj chic riders. We made a calander to raise money for bikers against breast cancer, and to raise money for our group. I had a professional photographer, and hair and make up artist. (it's a wig), and yes the bike is at the end of a dock on a lake. (ballsie i know, it could have fallen right in riding it into the middle of the lake)

An isolated result does not invalidate a study that based on a large sample size. I was just wondering what your husband's experience was to see if it fit into the middle of bell curve or not.

Here's the graphic:

So far I've been unable to find the actual study it was pulled from. It was conducted in Germany in 1991. AFAIK it shows the distribution of damage based on actual observation of the aftermath of a number of accidents.

Whoa whoa whoa, I wasn't trying to "invalidate" anything. I was just saying, after you stated that practically zero incidents happened with the top of the helmet, that my husband's accident was different and was part of those "zero" incidents.

And to add to that, as much as I would like to tell you exactly what happened when my husband hit the ground, he doesn't remember much at all. Looking at the helmet and putting what little he remembers together, it sounds like he hit the top/leaning towards the back of his head first, then the rest of his body came down. He had his camelback and backpack on which he believes took most of the force of the impact (very lucky). After he was done falling and got the inital impact over with, he started sliding.
